Visitation was Monday, Nov. 16, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg

Services were private.

Katie was born on June 18, 1931, in Guttenberg, the daughter of Frank and Verna (Hyde) Tomkins.

V. Nadine Powers

V. Nadine (Clark) Powers was born on Nov. 18, 1924, in Aurora, to parents Clifford Clark and Evalyn (Spensley) Clark. She died on Nov. 11, 2015. 

Her cherished cousin, Ellen Spensley Johnson, and Ellen’s friend, Bec Knudtson, of Guttenberg, survive Nadine, as well as other cousins.

"Buddy and Beyond" dance party Sunday at Lakeside

Fans of Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, the Everly Brothers, the Beatles and other music legends won't want to miss the "Buddy and Beyond" dance party on Sunday, Nov. 22, at Lakeside Ballroom in Guttenberg. The show and dance begin at 2 p.m. and will feature a walk down memory lane with music from the '50s and '60s.

Entertainer Johnny Rogers will headline the afternoon show with his portrayal of iconic entertainers from the golden era of rock and roll. Music from rock and roll legends along with music from "outlaw" legends Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson.

Supervisors receive audit update

The Clayton County Supervisors last Friday received an update on the annual county audit that is now underway. Neil Schraeder of Hacker, Nelson and Co., P.C., gave the update. He noted that work is progressing and added that he has received good cooperation from Special Deputy Auditor Loyce Dumke and the auditor’s staff.

The Clayton Ridge High School gymnasium overflowed with red, white, and blue on Veterans Day as community members, students, faculty, and families gathered to honor area vets. The 90-minute ceremony, led by Dennis Hanna, featured music by the German Band and members of the school band, and songs sung by faculty and retired faculty members.

CR athletes transition from Eagles to Hawkeyes in football, rowing

Many talented athletes graduated from Clayton Ridge High School in 2015, and two classmates are now competing on the collegiate level at the University of Iowa. Colton Rastetter, son of Julie and Thor Rastetter of Guttenberg, has been a part of an undefeated season for the Hawkeye football team. Janelle Burr, daughter of Raynelle and James Burr of Guttenberg, joined the Iowa rowing team when she started school this fall.

Duane Don Weyant, 85, of Edgewood, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester.

Visitation was Sunday, Nov. 8, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 9, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Edgewood, conducted by Pastor Mike Jackson.

Interment was at Edgewood Cemetery, Edgewood.

Carolyn (Klinkenberg) Berns, 76, of Saint Olaf, died Monday, Nov. 2, 2015, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

Visitation was before services at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo.

Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 9, at the funeral home, conducted by Rev. Gary Hatcher.

Interment was at Garnavillo Community Cemetery, Garnavillo.

Council changes waste hauler, tables electric amendment

Meeting in regular session on Monday, Nov. 2, the Guttenberg chose a new contractor for residential garbage collection and tabled an electric ordinance amendment regarding underground wiring.

Mayor Russ Loven led councilmembers Virginia Saeugling, Fred Schaub, Dave Schlueter, Jane Parker and Steve Friedlein through the evening's agenda. City Manager Mary Willett and City Attorney Michael Schuster were also present.
