Louis A. Decker

Louis A. Decker, 77, of Holy Cross, died Thursday, May 14, 2015, surrounded by his loving family at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

Visitation was Monday, May 18, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Farley.

Funeral services were Tuesday, May 19, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rickardsville, conducted by Rev. Noah Diehm.Eucharistic Minister was Helen Schmitt. Lector was Brother Stephen Markham. Placing of the pall was done by Patsy Decker, Wayne Decker, Paul Decker and Mike Decker. Giftbearers were Kayla Decker, Abbie Decker, Madison Decker and Becky Decker.

Brian K. Downing

Brian Kent Downing, of Mt. Laurel, N.J., 63, died Tuesday, May 5, 2015.

A private service will be held at a later date.

Brian was born to a military family stationed at Fort Gordon, Ga., to Sgt. Harold (Jake) and Alice Siebrecht Downing on Feb. 22, 1952. As a military family he was raised in several different areas from Augusta, Ga., to Tegernsee, Germany to Aurora, Colo., to Garnavillo.

Mary Ellen Horstman

Mary Ellen (Jones) Horstman, 86,  of Guttenberg, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2015, at the Guttenberg Care Center in Guttenberg.

Visitation was Thursday, May 14, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg.

Graveside services were Friday, May 15, at Guttenberg City Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Shane Anderson.

LeVerne W. Troester

LeVerne Walter Troester, 93, of Guttenberg, died Thursday, May 14, 2015, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Dubuque, after a short battle with liver cancer.

Visitation was Sunday, May 17, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg, and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Monday, May 18, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg.

Interment was at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Guttenberg.

Pool opening set for Memorial Day

Opening day at the Guttenberg Swimming Pool has been tentatively set for Memorial Day, May 25, weather permitting.

The hours that day will be: 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. for laps; 1:00-5:00 p.m. open swimming; 5:00-6:00 p.m. for laps and 6:00-8:00 p.m., for open swimming.

Memorial Day tribute is May 25

Guttenberg area residents will pay tribute to veterans both living and dead at the community's annual Memorial Day parade and program on Monday, May 25.

The parade begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Guttenberg Municipal Building. All veterans, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and anyone else planning to participate in the parade should meet at the municipal building between 9:00-9:15 a.m.

New charter service offers river tours

With the arrival of warmer weather comes a new Guttenberg business that will make the Mississippi River more accessible than ever to those without their own boats. 

Led by Captain Josef Vich, Mississippi River Charters offers private fishing, sightseeing and cruising experiences on the upper Mississippi River. Groups of up to six people can board the 17-foot Montauk Boston Whaler for four or eight hour trips to meet the business, entertainment and recreational interests of customers in the Guttenberg area.

River of Music concert series returns for second season

Umbrella Arts has announced the schedule for their upcoming River of Music concert series. For the second consecutive summer, Umbrella Arts celebrates local musicians with 10 free Friday night concerts in the park in Guttenberg.

Last year, the family friendly event drew an estimated 1500 visitors over the course of the summer with musical groups like Sounds of Nashville, Friends of the Backbone Bluegrass Festival, Topp Flight, and Uncle Sam’s Band. Many of those bands are returning this summer for the opportunity to play an outdoor show alongside the Mississippi River.

EMS benefit pancake breakfast

The public is invited to attend the annual pancake breakfast sponsored by Guttenberg EMS on Sunday, May 17, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the hospital conference room.

Those attending will also have the opportunity to tour the Lifeguard helicopter from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in the hospital parking lot.

The breakfast will feature pancakes, eggs, sausage, cinnamon rolls, milk, juice and coffee. A free will offering will be taken.

City council okays raises, mulls mandatory water connections

The Guttenberg city council, meeting in regular monthly session on May 4, granted raises to non-union employees, acted on mandatory water connections and decided to sell a parcel of city property. 

Mayor Russ Loven led councilmembers Virginia Saeugling, Fred Schaub, Dave Schlueter, Jane Parker and Steve Friedlein through the agenda. City Manager Mary Willett and City Attorney Michael Schuster were also present.
