Dr. Robert Merrick retires this month after 44 years of practice as a physician in Guttenberg. “Dr. Merrick has been a model physician,” says long-time coworker Dr. Andy Smith, who admires Merrick’s longevity, compassion, and dedication to the community.

Merrick and his wife, Karen, raised their three children, Kate, Emily, and Paul, in Guttenberg after Dr. Downey hired Merrick in 1971. “No one wanted to hire me because they thought I’d be drafted,” Merrick explained. “Dr. Downey said he’d take me as long as he could have me. I never got drafted.”

Over the course of his career in Guttenberg, Merrick mentored many medical students. In 2008 he was awarded Medical Educator of the Year by the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians. The award is given annually to recognize quality in family practice education to a member of the Academy involved in teaching at a student level, resident level or in the continuing education of family physicians. “He's been very involved in education and self-education, and continues to read and learn. He wanted to be the best doctor he could be, and he certainly is,” said Smith.

Designer Erin Tepper featured at Omaha Fashion Week

Erin Tepper, a 2011 graduate of Clayton Ridge High School, stands at center between eight models who debuted her clothing designs during Omaha Fashion Week in March. Tepper is a senior apparel design student at ISU and has interned in New York City at The Row, Jill Stuart, and Tory Burch. (Photo submitted)

“Let me show you the fabric,” says Erin Tepper, a 2011 Clayton Ridge graduate who is about to finish school at Iowa State University with a degree in apparel design. She pulls a coppery brown garment from her bag. “The fabric is what started it all.”

It’s easy to see why. Reversible sequins, each held in place by a single stitch, cover the cloth like scales. From a distance the fabric appears distressed, soft, and even slightly furry. When it’s close enough to touch, that’s exactly what you feel compelled to do – flip the sequins back and forth, revealing a light side and a dark side that create organic, ever-changing patterns.

Tepper purchased three-and-a-half yards of this fabric while interning in New York City. The unique find inspired eight outfits that debuted on the runway during Omaha Fashion Week (OFW), March 10-15.

“Despite what many people on the coasts might expect, fashion in the Midwest is strong,” commented OFW producer Brook Hudson. “There is a very real possibility Omaha can claim to be a leading fashion hub in the Midwest.”

Area health resources will come together next month for the fourth annual Clayton County Wellness Fair & Family Night, co-sponsored by Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, St. John's Church, Clayton Ridge Schools, Thrivent, Clayton County Dairy Promotion, Families Helping Hand, and Prairie Farms Dairy. The event will take place at Clayton Ridge High School in Guttenberg on Tuesday, April 14, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

The wellness fair will fill the high school gymnasium with over 40 vendors. New this year, the multipurpose room has been designated as an area specifically for interactive presentations. Exercise demonstrations will include weight lifting, balance exercises and equipment-specific instruction. “These groups are going to have a lot more space than before,” said Kari Harbaugh, one of many volunteers who help organize the annual countywide wellness fair.

A professional health market place navigator will be in attendance to provide information on health care coverage options. Resources for families who may need specialty clinics will be available, and cancer-related support groups and education will also be represented at the wellness fair. Numerous organizations will have booths offering various health screenings as well as information on area fitness, recreation and education opportunities. The event includes information relevant to people of all ages living all across Clayton County.
