Local pottery teacher has passion for working with clay

Local potter Steve Solomon enrolled in his first pottery class as a college student at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minn. 

"I needed to take an elective to fill out my class schedule my senior year," Steve told The Press. "A pottery class piqued my interest and I thought why not."

Easter egg hunt in Guttenberg this Saturday

Guttenberg's popular annual Easter egg hunt will be held this Saturday, March 30, at Riverside Park located at 300 South River Park Drive.

The event will begin promptly at 1 p.m.

Youngsters ages 0-10 are eligible to participate. There will be three individually timed hunts, separated by age groups.

From a very young age, newly hired Garnavillo Chief of Police Eric Van Horn had a passion for law enforcement. He was born and raised in West Union and graduated from North Fayette High School in 2011.

"Two of my uncles served in law enforcement; one as a Buchanan County Deputy and the other as a Cook County (Illinois) Deputy," he began. "The first time I ever saw the old Crown Vic sitting in my uncle's driveway and he let me wear his police hat, I was hooked."

Groundbreaking March 26 for Community Resource Center

The official groundbreaking ceremony for the Community Resource Center is planned for Tuesday, March 26, at 4:00 p.m. at the site located just south of the Guttenberg Municipal Building in the 500 block of South First Street.

The public is invited to attend. Following the shovel ceremony, a brief presentation will follow at the Guttenberg Brewery.

Harold R. McMillin, Jr.

Harold Robert McMillin, Jr., 78, of Guttenberg, passed away unexpectedly on March 2, 2024. He faced many health challenges in his life and fought each one with resilience and courage.

A celebration of a remarkable and impactful life was held on Friday, March 8, and funeral services were on Saturday, March 9, both at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg.

Pastor Harold was laid to rest at a private family service at Norway Lutheran Church, St. Olaf.

Kenneth A. Schwietert

Kenneth A. “Kenny” Schwietert, 70, passed away on March 7, 2024, in Sebring, Fla., with his wife, Helen, by his side, following a long battle with lung cancer. He lived well beyond what could be expected due to an early diagnosis and treatment starting in 2014 and continuing until his death.

Services are pending at First Presbyterian Church in Lake Placid, Fla.

Services are also pending at Colesburg Methodist Church in Colesburg.

Philip D. Hogan

Philip Daniel Hogan, 79, passed away after a battle with Alzheimer’s on March 5, 2024, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood.

Funeral services were Saturday, March 9, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Colesburg, conducted by Rev. John Haugen. Visitation was before services at the parish center. 

Burial was in St. Patrick Cemetery.
