Share your story GMHC seeks nominations for employee awards

Guttenberg Municipal Hospital & Clinics (GMHC) is expanding its employee recognition program.

At GMHC extraordinary moments of care happen every day. A nurse offering comfort in the late hours, a physical therapist celebrating small victories with a patient, or a dietary staff member serving a favorite meal to brighten someone’s day. These stories matter—and now there’s a way to honor them. GMHC is inviting patients, families, and colleagues to share their stories by nominating staff for one of three recognitions:

Chalk drawings return to GermanFest for first time in 20 years Recreating a tradition

Long-time Guttenberg/Clayton Ridge art teacher George Killian (right) works on a chalk drawing at Guttenberg GermanFest with some of his former students. Saturday was the first time designs were brought to life at the event in 20 years—since Killian retired from a 31-year teaching career. (Press photo by Audrey Posten)

In addition to a more traditional German design, another chalk drawing was this optical illusion depicting a board over a crevice. (Press photo by Audrey Posten)

“I don’t remember it hurting this much,” joked Molly Moser.

Kneeling on the street, her hands caked in colorful chalk, she was one of around a dozen former students who answered the call of long-time Guttenberg/Clayton Ridge art teacher George Killian to recreate the chalk drawings that once graced the street during Guttenberg’s GermanFest celebration.

Lock and Dam 10 hosts annual open house

Eric Thiese shows visitors the motors and gear work that opens and closes the lock and dam. During the self-guided tour, the lock and dam remained open to the public. (Press photo by Steve Van Kooten)

Lock and Dam 10 has two of its original miter gates, which are not used and do not have any motors attached to make them operational. The Corps originally intended the gates to work as an auxiliary chamber to pass through the Lock; however, during construction, the project was determined to not be viable. The Corps later put in a pylon wall to relieve the pressure off the inoperable gates. (Press photo by Steve Van Kooten)

On Saturday, while Germanfest let the beer flow and the brats sizzle, visitors could take a quick walk along the river for the Lock and Dam 10 open house.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers—St. Paul District hosts an open house for Lock and Dam 10 (which has been in operation since 1937) every September.

Community benefits from $200,000 in RAGBRAI money

More than $200,000 in RAGBRAI money was presented to representatives of approximately 40 local and regional non-profit organizations at an event held Wednesday evening, Sept. 10, at the Guttenberg Brewing Co. The majority of the funds came from parking fees when the Register's Annual Great Ride Across Iowa visited Guttenberg in July. (Press photo)

Despite the inconvenience of road closures, the crowds and the challenges of hosting thousands of cyclists during RAGBRAI's July stop in Guttenberg, the payoff for the community became clear Wednesday evening when the local organizing committee distributed more than $200,000 to local and area non-profits that helped prepare for and welcome the influx of visitors.

The announcement of recipients took place on Wednesday evening, Sept. 10, at the Guttenberg Brewing Co.
