Boaters address Regal Marina issue with PdC common council

Three boaters and users of Regal Marina urged the Prairie du Chien Common Council, Tuesday night, to work in better faith with the Regal family in an effort to assist the longtime business toward resuming all operations.

John Bell, of McGregor, Iowa, and Everett and Vickie Rowland, of Clermont, Iowa, spoke to the council about their concerns of a gridlock between the city and Regal Marine Group, which have leased the city’s marina property since 1963. Two members of the Regal family were present for the meeting but did not speak on the family’s behalf.

“I think you should have a committee and go down and talk to the Regals,” Bell proposed. “They deserve a chance to work with the city council.”

The Prairie du Chien High School baseball team is headed to the Wisconsin State Tournament after winning both of their games at the Division 3 La Crosse Aquinas Sectional Tuesday afternoon.

Longtime aerobics instructor retires

For 17 years, Mary Kay Lange taught aerobics classes, including pilates, step aerobics and sculpting, in Prairie du Chien. She led classes at Hoffman Hall most recently. She intends to continue attending classes at her leisure.

After 17 and a half years of teaching aerobics classes in Prairie du Chien, Mary Kay Lange is ready for something new. She fully intends to continue attending classes, but she retired May 24 from leading participants.

“I just knew I needed a change,” Lange said. “I will miss the socializing, but I won’t miss trying to find something new for everybody to try.”

Mary Kay moved to Prairie du Chien in 1987. She began attending aerobics classes, taught by Judy Sagedahl, at Blackhawk Junction as a way to simply meet members of the community.

“I met some wonderful people with similar interests,” she noted.

The classes moved to Hoffman Hall a few years later and Sagedahl left, so Lange decided to take over. She started watching exercise videos and TV shows, done by Denise Austin and others, and wrote down ideas from those to use in her classes. She also gleaned workout tips from fitness magazines.

Gundersen to expand availability with second MedLink Air helicopter

To meet growing demands, Gundersen Health System has announced that, on June 1, it added a second MedLink Air helicopter on a six-month trial basis. In addition, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day, one of the helicopters will be stationed at the Sparta-McCoy Airport and one at the Decorah, Iowa, Airport.

Summer to do: Camps, river activities, fishing, swimming, garden party, parks and more

The Prairie du Chien Parks and Recreation Department works hard all year to plan programs for the public, especially for families and children. In the spring and summer, activities are numerous.

Each year, Parks and Rec Director Mike Ulrich, his staff and volunteers try to plan new events, camps, leagues and more that will appeal to residents, non-residents and visitors. The many parks, shelters, outdoor pool, Hoffman Hall and other scenic locations in the Prairie du Chien area  serve as home to these lively offerings. Certainly, the standard programs, such as baseball, junior golf, tennis, volleyball, canoe/kayak and fitness classes are always scheduled and have a good amount of participants.

Crawford County reveals newest dairy princess

More than 100 people came out for the Crawford County Dairy Kick-Off Banquet May 29 at the Eastman United Methodist Fellowship Hall, where Brooklynn Nagel, the 2016 Crawford County Dairy Princess, was crowned.

Brooklynn is the daughter of Jon and Becky Nagel, of Eastman. She is in the 10th grade at Wauzeka-Steuben High School, where she is a very active, highly awarded, and a member of the FFA, currently serving as president of her chapter. Brooklynn is involved with many school programs such as Hornet Club. She is also a member of the Eastman Cloverleaf 4-H club, and a member of her church youth group. Currently, she is employed by Achenbach’s Hy-View Farms in Eastman as a farm assistant, feeding calves, milking, cleaning pens and sanitizing equipment. In the summer, Brooklynn works with her fair animals—pigs and sheep—attends mission trips and is a camp counselor. Brooklynn will serve as Crawford County’s 60th Dairy Princess.

Two-vehicle accident on Highway 18 bridge

On Wednesday, May 25, at 2:45 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was notified of two-vehicle accident in Bridgeport Township on the east span of the Highway 18 Mississippi River Bridge.

A westbound 2012 Chrysler owned and operated by Tammy Hendrix, 48, McGregor, was almost at a stop when it was struck from behind by a westbound 2000 Chevrolet S10 owned by William Zeeh and operated by Andrew Zeeh, 19, McGregor.

There were no injuries. Both vehicles had moderate damage and were driven from the scene. Due to area road construction, traffic was backed up from the west span onto the east span.

Zeeh was issued a citation for inattentive driving.

Freightliner truck strikes wall and rocks in construction zone

On Wednesday, May 25 at 6:50 a.m., the Crawford Sheriff’s Department was notified of a one-vehicle accident in Bridgeport Township in the Highway 18 construction zone, one mile west of Ward Road.

A 2007 Freightliner straight truck owned by URSA Logistics of Waukesha, Wis., and operated by Nicholas Ruedinger, 29, Boscobel, was hauling mail westbound on Highway 18.

Ruedinger stated the truck’s steering caused him to lose control.

The truck struck a concrete retaining wall in the construction zone and then veered to the north onto a large pile of rock where it came to rest.

Ruedinger suffered minor cuts but refused medical treatment.

Due to traffic and the construction zone, Highway 18 had to be detoured for approximately 45 minutes while the truck was removed.

The accident remains under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were the Bridgeport Fire and First Responders, Tri-State EMS, and Bob’s Towing.

Stolen firearms recovered from stream 10 months after burglary

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department recovered six stolen firearms from a fishing stream in Utica Township. They are now searching for information regarding the July 26, 2015 burglary, in which the firearms and gun safe were stolen. (Sheriff’s department photos)

These five firearms, owned by Bjorn Unseth, of Soldiers Grove, were found in a fishing stream near Utica. A sixth also owned by Unseth was reeled in by a fisherman in that location prior to the search and recovery.

A number of firearms stolen from a Soldiers Grove residence  last July were recovered in a Utica Township fishing stream May 12, according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department. Yet authorities continue seeking more information about those responsible for the burglary.

The sheriff’s department initially investigated the residential burglary at the Bjorn Unseth home, 106 Railway Ave., Soldiers Grove, on Sunday, July 26, 2015. A gun safe containing six firearms and other miscellaneous items of value had been stolen.

On Dec. 7, 2015, a local man walking on Orchard View Lane found a gun safe in the woods just off the road. The gun safe matched the description of the one taken from the Unseth home. A large hole had been cut in the back of the safe and all the contents had been removed, authorities said.

Area man’s illness serves as motivation for One Hour Challenge

Lew Borgman was diagnosed in January of 2015 with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), a bone marrow failure disorder. A former marathon runner, Lew battled through his weakened state to walk nearly one mile during his One Hour Challenge.

Friends, family and acquaintances of Lew and Mannick Borgman participated in the One Hour Challenge at the Borgman property in rural Eastman May 21. The goal for participants was to accomplish whatever amount of exercise they could in an hour. Lewis Borgman, an ironman triathlete from Eastman, was diagnosed in March 2015 with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), a bone marrow failure disorder. Just over one year later, despite undergoing both blood tests and blood transfusions at least once a week, and feeling very weak, Lew pushed himself through a personally-organized One Hour Challenge at his rural property on Oak Grove Ridge Road. About 50 people, including his doctor, clinic and hospital staff, joined him and witnessed his inspiring drive to walk three laps on the three-tenths-of-a-mile course.

Myelodysplastic syndromes are a group of diverse bone marrow disorders in which the bone marrow does not produce enough healthy blood cells, according to mds-foundation.org. Low blood cell counts are a hallmark feature of MDS and are responsible for some of the symptoms that patients experience—infection, anemia, spontaneous bleeding or easy bruising.
