Citizens air disgust about lost river access

Sen. Jennifer Shilling ridiculed the absurdity of the railroad trespassing law now enforced for Wisconsin sportsmen desiring to access the Mississippi River during a listening session she hosted regionally at the De Soto Community Center Thursday morning. Living in La Crosse near the railroad tracks by the golf course, Shilling sarcastically wondered if golfers unintentionally hitting a ball over the tracks would not be able to cross to retrieve it.

A change in 2006 to Wisconsin state law removed an exemption allowing people to walk directly across railroad tracks in order to fish, hunt and trap along the Mississippi River. Shilling is among those state legislators in favor of keeping public river access available to the people.

Mock accident presents real-life impact

River Ridge freshmen through senior students reacted emotionally during many portions of the mock crash scenario Tuesday morning in the high school parking lot.

The sounds of emergency sirens, the Jaws of Life popping metal and breaking glass, and a body bag being zipped up were bone-chilling as silence fell upon the River Ridge High Schoolers Tuesday morning. They watched intensely as a serious and emotional mock accident scenario unfolded in front of their eyes: a two-vehicle crash took the life of one, injured two others and resulted in OWI charges.

“It was pretty scary. I didn’t like it at all. I hope it never happens,” stated student actress Shannon Sturmer, who was a passenger in one of the vehicles and “died” in the crash.

The volunteer entities participating included the Bloomington Fire Department, West Grant Rescue Squad, Grant County Sheriff’s Department, Martin Funeral Home and B&M Auto. Led by Denny Cathman, of the rescue squad, 10 firemen, four EMTs and one deputy gave their time to present the mock accident lesson.

Projects tackled ahead of schedule, new fire truck purchase planned

As has become the trend for the city of Prairie du Chien in recent years, the city has more money remaining in its 2014-2016 capital fund than anticipated for this time of year. This is the result of a number of projects coming in under budget as well as other projects not taking place for various unpredictable reasons. So, administration came to the common council Tuesday night with a list of proposed projects to be completed ahead of schedule, resulting in a decrease to the capital fund’s remaining balance.

The projects, which the council approved, include:

1) Repairs to the aquatic park pool, $10,348,

2) Repairs to Hoffman Hall’s north wall, $11,000, this is in addition to the $10,000 already allocated for this project and will cover the entire building,

3) Electrical improvements on St. Feriole Island, $26,000.

Inaugural meeting set with hopes of starting local Young Professionals Group

The Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce is looking to start a Young Professionals (YP) Group.  An inaugural meeting is slated for Thursday, May 5, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Leisure Time Sports Bar and Bowl. Steve Benzschawel, the program director of Wisconsin Business World, will run the meeting.

Future business and community leaders are invited to this whiteboard session to help map the assets of Prairie du Chien and define what makes this an attractive area to work. Together, attendees will identify opportunities and articulate a clear strategy for developing a YP Group. Goals for the group will be to organize a community of peers under the guidance of the chamber, and provide opportunities for networking, career building, mentoring and leadership development.
