Special meeting of River Ridge School District July 29

The annual meeting of the River Ridge School District will be held on July 29 at the high school at 8 p.m.

One or more taxes may be voted on at the meeting, including:

A. Tax for sites, buildings and maintenance

B. School Debt Service Fund

C. School Capital Expansion Fund.

The School Capital Expansion Fund projects include: Heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems improvements and enhancements for buildings and sites; buildings and sites renovation, restoration and expansion/addition; buildings and sites structural improvements and enhancements necessary to comply with government regulations and violation notices; secure entrances and other structural security support modalities for buildings and sites; portable-type buildings for sites for the specific purposes of academic and other instruction, office space, and/or support for co-curricular and extracurricular activities and events to include athletics.

Clinicare Corp., headquartered in West Allis, Wis., has donated the Wyalusing Academy buildings and grounds to River to Valley Initiatives (RVI) of Prairie du Chien.

Unserviceable, distressed and faded flags were retired July 8 by the Bloomington American Legion Abraham Wetmore Post 148. The flag is a symbol of what Americans live and die by. This ceremony properly disposed of improper flags. Tattered, torn or too worn flags are not to be flown, as they are a sign of disrespect. To dispose of flags, take it to the local legion post and they can take care of it. In conclusion of the ceremony, the men saluted the flags among all the smoke. They honored the men and women who died protecting the American Flag and all it stands for.

The re-enactment lives

Although a re-enactment was not on the agenda for 2015 last year, the Villa Louis is proud to announce the re-enactment of the War of 1812 will take place Saturday and Sunday, July 18 and 19, on the Dousman’s grounds.

During the War of 1812, Prairie du Chien was involved in a battle, specifically July 17, 1814. This battle was the only battle that took place in Wisconsin during the War of 1812.

“People can see Wisconsin’s only War of 1812 battlefield and visit a historic encampment and battle re-enactment, on the west lawn of the Villa Louis estate located in beautiful Prairie du Chien, on the banks of the Mississippi River,” said M. Susan Witters, Villa Louis Office and Museum Store Manager.

Prairie du Chien prides itself on its history; this event celebrates what has happened and how it has shaped the town, state and country today.

Planted Tree hosts artist reception

The Planted Tree in Downtown Prairie du Chien held its third annual artists’ reception on Thursday, July 9. The reception is an opportunity for the artists and the public to mix and mingle. Above, Sallee Muehlbauer (center) examines some artwork with potter Jane Carlson (right) and Ronna DuCharme.

Classmates get together for 70th Wauzeka class reunion

Members of the Wauzeka High School Class of 1945 who gathered for their 70th Class Reunion were, front row: Elaine Schmitt of Steuben, Elaine “Brown” Heiar of Bloomington and Ruth “Reiger” Kessler of Onalaska. Back row: Harold “Sonny” Ray of Prairie du Chien and Robert Hazen of Bagley. Class members who could not attend were Elizabeth “Day” Cullison of Danville, Ill., Donna “Garvey” Lind of La Crosse and Shirley Lewig of Montana.

Seneca Ridge and Valley Rally to be non-stop fun July 11

For the spectators lining Highway 27 at 11 a.m. on July 11 in Seneca, there will be a moment when the line of tractors stretches to the southwest, breaching the horizon created by the hill on the way out of town. It’s an iconic moment of farming pride that can only be seen at the annual Ridge and Valley Rally parade.

Chris and Tammy Olson, the third generation owners and operators of Olson Feed Service, will serve as this year’s King and Queen of the rally.

But things get underway much earlier in the day. Each year’s rally begins with a 5K/10K walk-run at 7:30 a.m. The top three male and female runners in the 5K and 10K will receive medals.

The parade line-up goes on until a half-hour before the event. Entry is only $10 per person and $5 for children 14 and under.

The race begins and ends between the Seneca School softball and baseball fields on Taylor Ridge Road.
