Shirley R. Jensen

Shirley Ruth Jensen, 96, of Marquette, died peacefully Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021, at her home in Marquette. Shirley was born on Dec. 21, 1924, to Archie and Ruth (Nelson) Campbell in Kenosha, Wis. She graduated from Bradford High School (Kenosha) in 1943. During WWII, Shirley worked in an aircraft factory and was a telephone operator. She played piano at the USO.

Horse enthusiasts enjoy Whistlin’ Bit Saddle Club’s annual trail ride


Tina Nieland, the secretary/treasurer of the Whistlin’ Bit Saddle Club, said the rides are meant to “promote horsemanship, trail riding and serve as a yearly social event to bring people together. It gets you out in the beautiful countryside.” (Submitted photos)

The Whistlin’ Bit Saddle Club recently held its 73rd annual trail ride, bringing horse lovers and riders from all over Iowa and as far away as Ohio to the Elkader Horse Arena, where the ride starts and ends. This year’s ride, hosted by Dean and Missy Leonard, also utilized portions of the Pony Hollow Trail on a beautiful trek across northeast Iowa.

Schellhorn’s second place finish highlights conference meet for MFL MarMac

Sydney Moser’s 15th place effort earned her all-conference honors. The senior ran a time of 23:15.6, in just her first race of the season due to injury.

In addition to Schellhorn, MFL MarMac also boasted two other top-20 finishers, with junior Will Koether (left) placing 18th at 19:48.2 and freshman Tucker Ruff right behind him in 19th, after running the course in 19:51.2.

Abby Schellhorn came in 18th at the conference meet.

Senior Dusty Berns runs at the Upper Iowa Conference meet, in which the Bulldog boys placed fourth of six teams—just one point shy of third place South Winn.

Ruby Koeller took the 36th spot last Thursday.

Freshman Logan Ross turned in a time of 24:05.3, placing 39th.

Warriors run well at conference meet

Delaney Scherf crossed the finish line 18th in the conference meet. The Central girls placed third as a team, putting in some remarkable performances in preparation for the district meet.

Storm Huinker finished 40th in last week's meet.

Eva Embretson placed seventh in the JV race, and was part of the Warrior contingent that won the JV title.

Gavin Holst's 11th place finish earned him all-conference status.

Hannah Asche was Central's top finisher, in fourth place. Her time of 20:55 will also be credited with a Central record for the 5K distance for the Ossian course.

Jaydin Dettman crossed the finish line seventh with a time of 22:04, making her an all-conference runner.
