'Time' for a new chapter: Bickel Clock returns to McGregor’s Main Street

The new Bickel Clock was installed alongside the Bickel Insurance building on McGregor’s Main Street two weeks ago. Last week, officials from the city of McGregor and McGregor-Marquette Chamber of Commerce, fellow McGregor business owners and friends and family gathered for a ribbon cutting to celebrate its arrival as well as Dan Bickel’s 50 years in business. (Photos by Audrey Posten)

Dan Bickel has had an interest in clocks since his youth, when he first traded for one, and has collected many over the years. He said it's only fitting one stands outside his business.

“I have a fondness for clocks,” said Dan Bickel.

VCTC puts Volga City Opera House up for sale after 14 years saving it

The Volga City Opera House opened in 1914. A restoration effort by non-profit VCTC that began 14 years ago has “saved” the building, and it’s ready for new ownership. (Photos by Jillian Webb Herrmann)

In 14 years, a long list of volunteers turned the opera house from a wildlife sanctuary bound for the scrap yard into a profit generating operation, completely flipping a revenue stream that heavily relied on donations and grants. In recent years, it was food and beverage and ticket sales leading the way.

Pleasant Grove Cemetery Avenue of Flags will remain up through Fourth of July

For the first time this year, the Avenue of Flags at McGregor’s Pleasant Grove Cemetery will remain up past Memorial Day. The tribute will extend through Flag Day and the Fourth of July to give community members more opportunities to view it. (Photos by Audrey Posten)

While people are at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, they will also notice photos displayed at some of the veterans’ graves. Thanks to resident Joe Brooks, around 80 graves at Pleasant Grove and 20 at St. Mary’s Cemetery have been marked with photos as well as the veteran’s name, branch of service and other details.

Photo markers provide insight into veterans buried there
