CaseyCakes offers a variety of treats, including cupcakes, gourmet cakes, sheet cakes, pies and cookies.

In Monona, two home bakeries are becoming household names. Sugar Jacks and CaseyCakes are run by stay-at-home mothers who know a thing or two about baking and creating businesses that have put them on the map.

“My business started by accident honestly. I have never had a great interest in cooking. However, my passion has always been art,” said Jackalyn Voss, owner of Sugar Jacks. Her home bakery started in January 2017, focusing on custom-decorated, soft sugar cookies with royal icing.

Monona council looks forward to bright future of improvements and upgrades

On June 18, the Monona city council met to discuss current issues within the city and how they can become better. 

Police report

With the police department facing a busy season, they wished to remind the council and the community to not blow grass clippings on the streets. If more than one occurrence happens at one residence, the owner of the property will receive a fine.

Ordinance 402 discussed, Marquette council debates what is best for community

On June 12, the Marquette city council met to hold a public hearing related to Ordinance 402 and the Canadian Pacific Railroad, along with other topics. 

During the council meeting, a public hearing discussed the second and last readings of Ordinance 402, which would change the Canadian Pacific Railroad’s current property’s zoning district clarification from A1 - limited agriculture to C1 - highway commercial, if the railroad company is able to receive the correct permits. The property in consideration is located south of the railroad tracks, north of Bloody Run, near the Driftless Area Wetlands Centre. The company is interested in building a new structure, which would help turn Marquette into a central hub.

Of the wine and beer options, several are new to this year’s event, said Kristie Austin, executive director of the McGregor-Marquette Chamber of Commerce, which holds the event.

Efforts underway to replenish McGregor’s tree population

Over 40 trees have been planted in McGregor in the past month, the first step in replenishing a population that was hit hard by last year’s tornado.

The effort has been led by the city’s newly-established volunteer tree board, which includes residents Sandy Beisker, Joe Brooks, Maria Brummel, Dan Keyes, Deb Scott and Morris Weller.

“McGregor is known for its trees, especially in the fall,” said Scott, who’s the board chair. “It’s wonderful to be a part of the board, bringing back that life.”

Iowans headed to the polls in high numbers for the June 5 primary election.

As of June 1, there were 1,964,522 active registered voters in the state, surpassing the previous high of 1,956,723 heading into the 2010 June primary, according to a statement from Secretary of State Paul Pate.

School board approves contracts across the district

On June 12, the MFL MarMac school board met to discuss a variety of topics including contracts, stipends, and agreements, along with a multitude of other matters

“They will be missed,” Superintendent Dale Crozier stated as he listed the teachers who were resigning. “We wish all of them the best.” Resigning staff were teacher Becky Holt, paraprofessional Sarah Ferguson, bus driver Larry Cox, cook Sharon Strnad and high school track coach Dan Anderson. A replacement for Anderson is pending.

Next steps taken for Monona annexation of 13 properties

At its June 4 regular meeting, the Monona Council passed a resolution approving the annexation of 13 parcels of real estate adjacent to the city’s southeast boundary.

From here, city administrator Dan Canton said the Iowa Secretary of State’s office will be notified. Once the annexation is acknowledged there, the county recorder, as well as local utilities and the Iowa DOT and DNR, will be notified of the change. He said the final notification will go to the Iowa State Treasurer’s office, a move that will trigger additional road use tax funds going to the community due to a slight increase in population.

McGregor residents learned what a potential riverfront hotel/condo development could look like and cost during an informational meeting led by consultant Eric Tweten May 31.

A 25-year veteran of the hospitality industry, Tweten was hired by the city earlier this year to explore development options for the former Holiday Shores Motel property. The spot has been vacant for nearly three years, after the city council denied a request from the property owners, Trilogy Partners LLC, to re-zone the property to allow for the construction of condominiums.

DNR seeking judicial enforcement against Walz Energy due to ongoing violations

Ongoing violations at the Walz Energy site near Monona have prompted the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to seek judicial enforcement.

In March, the DNR notified Walz Energy that it faced a $10,000 penalty for three separate violations that have occurred during construction of the 10,000-head cattle feedlot and biogas operation.
