Annual Spring Arts and Crafts Festival returns May 26-28

The McGregor-Marquette Chamber of Commerce will host its 39th annual Spring Arts and Crafts Festival May 26-28, in McGregor’s beautiful Triangle Park.

Vendors will offer a variety of handcrafted items—ranging from jewelry, wood crafts and fabric art to paintings, caricatures, specialty cards and gourmet dips—each day. Booths will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, then from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday.

If you need a break from browsing the vendor booths, relax in Triangle Park and listen to some musical entertainment. Father-daughter duo LaBarge, along with Pat Dillet and Tim the Front Porch Picker, will play both Saturday and Sunday, with music running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tunes can also be heard Monday, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Monona's annexation plans proceeding

The city of Monona’s plan to voluntarily annex 13 property parcels on the city’s southeast boundary is moving forward, now that all property owners have filed written applications with the city. 

A public notice stating the city’s intent was published last week. City administrator Dan Canton said the city’s attorney, Greg Schiller, has also notified the Clayton County Board of Supervisors.

Mar-Mac EMS celebrates 50 years of service

Dana Ferguson has served as a Mar-Mac Rescue Squad EMT for 17 years.

With 37 years of service, Burton Walters III is currently the squad’s longest-running EMT. His parents, Burton Jr. and Donna, were among the founding members.

EMS Director Mike Gilman demonstrates how the Lucas 3 chest compression system works. Mar-Mac EMS received the new piece of technology through a grant last year. Battery-operated, it performs compressions just like a person would.

Mar-Mac EMS is active in the community, and can often be seen at the local parades.

The rescue squad’s first ambulance, in 1968, was a Chevrolet Suburban purchased for $4,000.

In 1976, directors of the Mar-Mac Emergency Squad reviewed contributions to the new ambulance. From left are Helen Stade, Irene Pederson, Bill Meyer, Eugene Milewsky, Severin Johnson and Ivy Sauer. The $10,000 goal to purchase a van, replacing the first ambulance, was almost met.

The first call came in at 5:45 p.m. on June 10, 1968, 15 minutes before the rescue squad’s selected starting hour. Larry Weigle and George Vogel made the first run, assisting Keith Klotzbach, in Farmersburg. Their ambulance was a 1968 Chevrolet Suburban purchased from Huebsch Chevrolet for $4,000. The light was from the police department, rigged up by one of the first EMS volunteers, Jim Cowell. Thornburg Funeral Home provided the first kit.

That’s how the Mar-Mac Rescue Squad, Clayton County’s first EMS service, got underway 50 years ago.

Ordinance restricts large trucks from parking in downtown Marquette

Large trucks will no longer be allowed to park for long periods of time on North Street, in downtown Marquette, after the council unanimously amended the code of ordinances pertaining to parking limitations at its May 8 meeting.

The ordinance change applies to any vehicles requiring more than a four-ton license and greater than 10 feet in height. It prohibits people from parking—unattended—a motor truck, semi-trailer or other motor vehicle with trailer attached on North Street unless the vehicle is engaged in the delivery or receiving of merchandise or cargo.

Candidate Profiles: House District 56

Lori Egan and Andy Kelleher are vying for the Democratic nomination for State House District 56.

Lori Egan and Andy Kelleher will face off in the June 5 Democratic Primary Election, with the winner becoming the Democratic Party’s candidate for State House District 56 in the November 2018 General Election. To date, no Republican candidate has emerged to contend for the seat, which is being vacated by Kristi Hager. State House District 56 includes all of Allamakee County and 19 townships in Clayton County. Marion, Highland and Boardman Townships are not in House District 56. Egan and Kelleher both took time to share their thoughts on some of key issues.

MFL MarMac senior awards and scholarships presented

Emily McCormick (left) and Erin Blietz presented the Brent Blietz Memorial Scholarships to student-athletes Reagan Butikofer and Derek Larson. For the students, the scholarships were just one of several each received that night.

MFL MarMac Superintendent Dr. Dale Crozier presented Coltin Ball with the A.N. Busse Scholarship. Ball also earned Dollars for Scholars and UMGC scholarships, as well as Family Dentistry Associates of Monona, Luana Community Club, Karri Kautman and National Honor Society scholarships.

Micah Decker received the State Bar American Citizenship Award from Whitney Gessner.

Audra Hallberg tearfully presented the Erin Hallberg Memorial Scholarship to her goddaughter, Kennedy McShane, May 9. Audra has presented this award since 2002 to a senior going to an Iowa college to major in education. Kennedy was born just one month after Erin died on Oct. 3, 1999. Erin had already purchased Kennedy’s baby shower gift (a Hawkeye onesie) before her death. Kennedy plans to attend the University of Northern Iowa (Erin’s alma mater) and major in education.

MFL MarMac High School Principal Larry Meyer highlighted Hope McGlaughlin as the Class of 2018 Valedictorian and recipient of the KWWL “Best of Class” and Governor’s Scholarship Recognition Program honors.

Jerica Meana was recognized as the salutatorian of the MFL MarMac Class of 2018 by high school principal Larry Meyer.

The Senior Awards and Scholarship Night for the MFL MarMac Class of 2018 was held May 9, in the high school auditorium. Graduating seniors who were recognized included:

Construction of Alpine Fusion Network underway in Marquette

Alpine Communications began construction of its Fusion fiber optic network in Marquette at the start of May. West Union Trenching and Finley Engineering, who are aiding Alpine with the project, have started work in the “Bench” neighborhood first, then will progress toward downtown Marquette. After boring or digging the narrow trench required to install the fiber cable, workers will restore residents’ yards to a condition as close to the original as possible.

Alpine Communications began construction of its Fusion fiber optic network in Marquette at the start of May. The project will wrap up in the Pleasant Ridge neighborhood, of McGregor, marking Alpine’s first major project to extend Fusion fiber optics into its rural territory.

McGlaughlin, Meana top MFL MarMac Class of 2018

Hope McGlaughlin has earned the honor of being valedictorian of the MFL MarMac Class of 2018, while Jerica Meana has been named salutatorian.

Hope, who is the daughter of Wayne and DeeAnn McGlaughlin, said she’s known the distinction could be a possibility since she was a freshman.

“I didn’t really realize it, though, until this year,” she said. “I’ve worked hard and stayed focused, so it’s kind of nice to be recognized.”

Jerica, daughter of Troy Meana and Andra Meana, said she felt much the same.

Family members, colleagues, neighbors and community members all came together Saturday afternoon to dedicate McGregor’s Determination Park in honor of David J. Breitbach, a long-time resident and park board volunteer who passed away unexpectedly last summer.

Breitbach was the driving force behind the establishment of Determination Park, which is located in the Ridgewood West Subdivision, and wrote two successful Upper Mississippi Gaming Corporation grants that funded the park shelter and play structure.

Infrastructure a hot topic during Ernst visit to Pattison Sand

U.S. Senator Joni Ernst visited Pattison Sand Company, in Clayton, May 4, as part of her 99-county tour.

During the one-hour stay, Ernst toured the Pattison site, learning about the operation’s history and its products.

“It’s interesting,” she shared. “This is my first time down here. They’ve grown so much...They’ve done well with taking challenges and making them into opportunities.”
