Two-vehicle accident claims life of McGregor man

An April 12 two-vehicle accident outside Monona claimed the life of a McGregor man.

 

The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 10:35 a.m., reporting a two-vehicle accident on Highway 52, approximately a quarter-mile south of Highway 18.

Bachman vaults her way to all-around state champion title

Kaylee Bachman is a testament to the fact that hard work, dedication, perseverance and attention to detail truly does pay off when competing in a sport. Last month, the MFL MarMac eighth grader earned the title of Level 8 All-Around State Champion at the Wisconsin State Gymnastics Championships. 

Kaylee competed with TNT Gymnastics, which has training locations in Prairie du Chien, as well as Waukon, Richland Center and Mauston. She’s been a gymnast at TNT since age 4.5, when parents Rachel and Chet enrolled her in recreational classes.

Rehabilitation efforts for the Sullivan Opera House received a large boost last week, when the city of McGregor was awarded a $100,000 Community Catalyst Building Remediation grant for the project. The announcement was made at an awards presentation during the Iowa Rural Development Summit, in Grinnell.

McGregor was one of 18 Iowa communities that received grants for the remediation or redevelopment of underutilized buildings to stimulate economic growth in the community.

McGregor and Marquette plan spring clean-up days

Citing abuse, Monona opts not to hold garbage amnesty days

The cities of Marquette and McGregor have scheduled spring clean-up dates for later this month, giving residents the opportunity to throw out some items they can’t usually set at the curb.

Marquette will hold its event Saturday, April 28, from 8 to 11 a.m., at roundhouse park (the former rail yard). Residents are welcome to bring excess refuse and place it inside dumpsters. Items that will not be accepted include leaves, grass, brush, dead animals, liquids, paint, batteries, chemicals, oil, hazardous waste and tires. No electronics—including TVs—will be accepted.

Forestry plan unveiled for Pikes Peak State Park

A natural resources management plan has been developed for Pikes Peak State Park, in an effort to guide how the park’s forest is maintained. Two notable management efforts detailed in the plan include tree plantings in areas heavily damaged by the July 19 tornado, as well as re-establishment of some of the open savanna-like forest conditions present in the area prior to European settlement. A natural resources management plan has been developed for Pikes Peak State Park, in an effort to guide how the park’s forest is maintained.

“I’m excited about it,” said park manager Matt Tschirgi, who led a March 20 public meeting about the plan with Bruce Blair, area Iowa DNR forester, and Scot Michelson, Northeast Iowa District Parks Supervisor for the Iowa DNR. “In the past, management has been kind of willy-nilly and piecemeal, where we hope we’re doing the right thing.”

Help build McGregor’s new hiking trail

Swing some tools and leave a legacy. On Saturday, April 7, the public is invited to help build a new hiking trail through the forest between Center Street and Cemetery Road, in the city of McGregor. 

Interested persons should meet at the top of the hill on Center Street, just south of Eagle Drive, at 10 a.m. The work day will run until 3 p.m. 

The area is owned by the city, and the idea of developing a trail there has grown in the past few years, said Duane Boelman, McGregor’s deputy clerk and economic development lead, who organized several meetings late last year to discuss the proposed trail.

Grant will bolster after school activities

MFL MarMac has received a $10,000 grant through HAWC (Howard, Allamakee, Winneshiek, Clayton) Partnerships for Children, which will bolster activities offered to students outside the regular school day.

One of the programs is an after school art club. Offered at both the high school and the McGregor Center, the club allows students to spend time with their friends, while being creative and having fun. Art teacher Natalie Heiring and school nurse Jennelle Schroeder lead several sessions a month at the middle school, while art teacher Michelle Meyer handles duties at the high school.
