Guttenberg native retires from career with Los Angeles PD

Officer Debra (Kickbush) Dickerson, a native of Guttenberg, recently retired from the Los Angeles Police Department after 27½ years.

Officer Dickerson began her career in December 1989 as a police recruit in the police academy, graduating as an officer in May 1990.  As a police officer, she worked assignments in Hollywood Division, Foothill Division, Hollenbeck Vice, Newton Division and Planning and Research Division before transferring to Air Support Division in December 1996.

Swimming lessons provide a lifetime of safety and fun

Guttenberg native Forest Brown has been swimming at the municipal pool for a lifetime. He learned to swim through lessons there; one of his first jobs was in the concession stand, selling candy, chips, pop, ice cream, and gummy fish (a penny a piece); he joined a swim team and as an adult uses the pool for exercise.

Art by the River Fine Art Festival & Workshop this Saturday, June 3

Guttenberg Gallery & Creativity Center will hold the first annual Art by the River Fine Art Festival & Workshop this Saturday, June 3, at Ingleside Park in Guttenberg. The free event will showcase the work of area artists and will offer workshops, live music and food all day long. Billboards, television and radio ads have been visible throughout the month of May, and organizers expect a good turn out on Saturday.

City council mulls future of city manager position

The Guttenberg city council, meeting in special session on May 22, approved a budget amendment for the current fiscal year and discussed the future of the now-vacant city manager position.

On hand for the meeting were Mayor Russ Loven, Assistant City Manager Jamie Blume, and councilmembers Steve Friedlein, Jane Parker, Virginia Saeugling, Fred Schaub and Austin Greve.

River of Music series returns

Umbrella Arts leaders are pleased to announce sponsors for the 2017 River of Music season.  For the fourth consecutive summer, free concerts will be held in Ingleside Park on Friday evenings, 6-8 p.m., beginning June 2 and running through Aug. 11.

Farmers Market and Shop Hop

The Guttenberg Farmers Market opens for the season at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 20. In conjunction, downtown merchants are holding a "Celebrating Spring Shop Hop" to encourage shopping local and to get people out and about for spring. 

"Visit local businesses for specials and sales on May 20! Enjoy the day with friends and family and support small business in Guttenberg," said Chamber Director Emily Sadewasser.

Forestry mulching business clears unwanted brush, trees

A new Guttenberg business is springing to life as the weather warms. Wille Greenspace uses specialized mobile tracked equipment to grind unwanted underbrush, invasive species, and trees to mulch at ground level, evenly distributed on site. The new business can quickly and affordably clear ATV, UTV or equestrian trails, fence lines, shooting lanes and field perimeters, as well as improve forest stands and wildlife habitats.

NEICAC celebrates community action month

In Clayton County, there are over 800 households and more than 2,000 people living below poverty level. More than a quarter of that population is under the age of 17. Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation (NEICAC), a private nonprofit, has been serving these members of Clayton County since 1968. NEICAC celebrates National Community Action Month in May by sharing its stories and successes.

Memories of a tragic train and car collision seventy years ago

When the sound of a train whistle pierces the air as it passes through Guttenberg, resident Barb Leitgen  often reflects on a childhood memory of a horrific car and train collision near St. Mary's Church in Guttenberg.

Leitgen vividly recalls the time, date and place of the accident. "I remember a train calling its whistle on Sunday, June 13, at quarter to ten, in 1946," she said. "I was in St. Mary's Church and we heard a terrible, terrible crash — crunching metal — during the service."

Short agenda for city council

The Guttenberg city council at a short monthly meeting on May 10 heard a hospital update, granted requests from the Chamber of Commerce for summer events and made plans for a special meeting on May 22.

Mayor Russ Loven called the meeting to order with council members Austin Greve, Fred Schaub, Jane Parker, Virginia Saeugling and Steve Friedlein in attendance, along with Assistant City Manager Jamie Blume and City Attorney Michael Schuster.
