Jaleen L. Fassbinder

Jaleen Lillian (Geuder) Smock Fassbinder passed away on Wednesday, March 2, 2016, at the Guttenberg Care Center.

Visitation was Friday, March 4, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg, and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Saturday, March 5, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Shane Anderson.

Interment was at Mt. Harmony Cemetery, Elkport.

Rock and Roll on the River April 9 at Lakeside Ballroom

Tickets are now on sale for the Rock and Roll on the River Show to be held Saturday, April 9, at Lakeside Ballroom in Guttenberg. The evening will feature music from the golden era of rock and roll.

This year's headliners are the Midwest Rock N Soul Revue  featuring a soup performance by Maurice Walker-Jules and an Elvis tribute by Eddie Simpson; local favorites Backwater and special guest Carl Thompson.

A timely book discussion and panel discussion is happening in Guttenberg. Dr. Atul Gawande’s book, Being Mortal: Illness, Medicine and What Happens in the End, is available to the public for reading in preparation for a panel discussion of the book on  Tuesday, April 26, at Eagle Ridge Independent and Assisted Living in Guttenberg, at a time to be announced at a later date.

Railroad to close crossings at Pryam and Herder Streets

Guttenberg city officials announced last week that two railroad crossings are scheduled for closure in 2016. Pryam Street, on the north side of the city near a lot owned by Kann Manufacturing, and Herder Street, which runs between St. Mary School and Kuempel True Value, will no longer be through streets from River Park Drive to Highway 52. 

“The crossings for closure are chosen from a list that Canadian Pacific Railroad would like to close,” said City Manager Mary Willett.

The third meeting of the group studying the impact of mine expansion in Clayton County was held Thursday, March 3, at the Clayton County Office Building in Elkader. Committee members Susi Nehls, Anne Osmondson, Tom Blake, Roy Blair, Jack Knight and Mike Finnegan were in attendance and participated in discussions with the four landowners petitioning for zoning changes to allow mining on their properties.

Charles Finch of Guttenberg received a gift this past Christmas that honored the acting talent of his late sister and brought her career into sharper focus for the Finch family.

A framed montage containing  a photo of Carol Finch Dye and the history of a prestigious award named in her honor was presented to Charles by his son and daughter-in-law, John and Lisa Finch of Guttenberg. The keepsake tells the story of the Carol Finch Dye Award, presented for 30 years by the Yale School of Drama.

Proposed city budget calls for drop in property tax levy rate

The Guttenberg city council will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 7, on a budget for the coming fiscal year that calls for a small decrease in the city's tax levy rate. The budget anticipates approximate expenditures of $6.33 million and revenues of $6.32 million. 

The proposed budget covers the fiscal year from July 1, 2016, to June 30, 2017. If approved, the proposed rate per $1000 valuation on regular property would be $14.97794. This compares to the current year's rate of $15.11220.

A curious crowd gathered at the Guttenberg Public Library on Tuesday evening, Feb. 22, overfilling the nearly 30 seats in the meeting room. “What we can do tonight, I hope, is educate you and let you know what’s actually happening – not just in Guttenberg, but in the whole country,” said Joan Shannon of the Guttenberg Pharmacy.
