Captain Dennis Hartig and his wife, Susan, of Guttenberg, have decided to channel their river experiences into a business that makes those very experiences available to all.

Local fundraisers to provide entertainment this weekend

Guttenberg area residents will have the opportunity to contribute to two fundraisers this weekend, with entertainment at Lakeside Ballroom on Friday, July 31, and an Alzheimer’s walk in the park on Saturday morning.

Guttenberg EMS receives critical care authorization

The Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency and Trauma Services have recently authorized Guttenberg EMS as a paramedic and critical care transport service. 

“This is a milestone in the continued growth of our ambulance service and our commitment to providing the best care possible to the community and the people that GMH serves,” states Kim Gau, CEO of Guttenberg Municipal Hospital. "Not all rural access hospitals like GMH have the transport capabilities of a ground critical care service like we now have in Guttenberg.”

Four seats up for election on Clayton Ridge School board

The Clayton Ridge School Board will have terms expiring for four of its current members this fall. Election day is Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Seats up for election  are those currently held by Dr. Jeff Hoffmann, Christine Aulwes, Janice Andregg and John Heying. 

Election papers may be picked up at the high school business office in Guttenberg, or from Mary Seifert, board secretary, from now through July 30. Papers must be returned to the Clayton County Auditor’s office, or to the school business office, no later than 5:00 p.m. on July 30, 2015.

Following the retirement of Clayton Ridge superintendent Allan Nelson and the resignation of high school principal Kris Einck in early June, the Clayton Ridge School Board acted swiftly to fill two of the district’s most important roles. The board chose middle and elementary school principal Shane Wahls to serve as the new superintendent of schools, as well as continuing in his position as middle school principal. Winterset native Andy Peterson has been hired as elementary and high school principal.

A Guttenberg High School graduate and member of St. John’s Lutheran Church will be ordained this month after completing his educational requirements and receiving approval from a committee of professors and spiritual leaders. The ordination service for David John Tielbar will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Saturday, July 25, at 2:00 p.m.

Bluegrass music this Friday at River of Music in the park

Guttenberg’s River of Music, a free summer concert series for residents and guests, will feature music by The Friends of Backbone Bluegrass this Friday, July 17, at the band shell in the park along the river north of the school near China Street. The talented musicians will present a relaxing evening of music from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Concert goers should bring their own lawn chair or blanket and are encouraged to bring picnic baskets and coolers and enjoy dinner or snacks during the concert. Wine and beer are allowed. However, glass bottles are not permitted.

City council July meeting

At the Guttenberg city council regular monthly meeting on July 6, the council hired an engineering firm for the water main improvement project and discussed the current golf cart ordinance. Mayor Russ Loven led the evening's agenda with councilmembers Steve Friedlein, Jane Parker, Dave Schlueter, Fred Schaub and Virginia Saeugling in attendance, along with City Manager Mary Willett and City Attorney Michael Schuster.

Garnavillo resident and 2008 graduate of Clayton Ridge High School Elizabeth (Bergan) Nazarchyk is the author of a recently published children’s book called Town of McLee

While Nazarchyk hasn’t formally studied writing, she says she began writing books with her mother at a young age. “It was always just kind of a fun thing we did,” Nazarchyk laughs. “She began writing books for me because I always loved being read to and being the star of the story. After that I started writing books and reading them to her – it’s been an ongoing thing.”
