National Geographic photographer flies overhead

National Geographic photographer George Steinmetz took this photograph of the Doug and Kathy Reimer farm. His current project is a book about food and commercial agriculture, which will give readers insights into areas many people think of as 'fly-over country.' (Photo courtesy of George Steinmetz)

Renowned journalist, photographer, and explorer George Steinmetz hovered over northeast Iowa last month, documenting the fall harvest from his motorized paraglider. He used satellite images from Google Earth to pinpoint the Guttenberg farm of Doug and Kathy Reimer on Ironwood Road as the ideal location for his photos.

Groups send shelter to refugees

Pre-K Sunday School children at St. John's Lutheran Church in Guttenberg are among those who learned about the refugee crisis and explored a ShelterBox on Refugee Sunday. (Photo submitted)

An estimated 11 million Syrians have fled their homes since the March 2011 outbreak of civil war in Syria, precipitated by anti-government protests. There are over four million refugees, three quarters of them women and children, seeking safety and shelter across neighboring countries, and a startling 7.6 million people are displaced within the borders of their own country. Many are living in flimsy, cramped makeshift shelters, like chicken coops or abandoned sheds, with no heat or running water, and many are injured from continuous bombing and shelling.

This Veterans Day, you may see our nation’s heroes dressed in their finest, carrying flags and rifles and responding to commands from a comrade. Those traditions aren’t reserved for Nov. 11. A dedicated group of Guttenberg volunteer veterans provides full military rites for every veteran who dies in the area. “The military funeral is our last farewell to a comrade,” said American Legion member Charlene Andregg, who gathers the men and women for each funeral. “All honorably discharged veterans are entitled to that.”

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller will have final say on whether or not Clayton County Auditor Dennis Freitag remains in office.

The Clayton County Board of Supervisors met Oct. 28 to discuss possible action against Freitag, and ultimately decided to refer the matter to Miller’s office to determine whether a Chapter 66 petition is appropriate. Amphibians under surveillance

Kevin Hansen, left, and Jeff LeClere, right, check one of several traps they've set for mudpuppies along the shore of the Mississippi River. They'll continue to capture and study the unique amphibians throughout the winter, when mudpuppies are most active. (Press photo by Molly Moser)

The Mighty Mississippi undoubtedly holds many mysteries within her muddy waters, and one such secret is being uncovered this fall in Guttenberg. A slimy, carnivorous creature lurks beneath the surface, evading even those who know the river best. The ellusive necturus maculosus is extremely slimy, with lidless eyes and external gills. It has a head like a dragon, the body shape of a fish, and sports four stubby legs with four toes on each tiny foot. It can grow to be nearly 20 inches long and live up to 20 years. This fully aquatic amphibian is known as the common mudpuppy.

Editor’s note: As a Guttenberg native and a member of Guttenberg Development & Tourism, there’s nothing more exciting to me than someone who proclaims, “There’s nothing to do in Guttenberg!” Life here may not be fast-paced, but there are plenty of opportunities to get involved, meet great people, and enjoy living - and I'm always eager to pass that knowledge on. This story is the first in a series planned to highlight local groups and organizations that welcome members of the community and enhance our city’s culture. If you would like your group to be featured, please contact The Guttenberg Press.
