Wilker barn restoration nears completion

The grass is still green, but the autumn leaves are aflame at the idyllic rural Guttenberg home of Jim and Joan Wilker. A small stream flows along the edge of their backyard and a weeping willow tree hangs low. The Wilker family, which includes five children (and their spouses and children), has spent the past several weeks restoring the historic pin barn on their property.

Clayton Ridge School Board swears in new members, appoints president

The final meeting of the retiring Clayton Ridge school board was called to order at 7 p.m. on Oct. 1 by board secretary Mary Seifert due to the absences of President Kathy Ihde and Vice-President Janice Andregg. Members in attendance were John Heying, Mike Finnegan, Christine Aulwes, Jason Reimer and Jeff Hoffmann.

Five candidates run for three seats on Guttenberg Municipal Hospital board

1. Why are you running for hospital board? I grew up in this area and have seen our hospital grow from a hospital, with a few rooms in a residence on River Park Drive, to the wonderful, strong, modern facility it is today. I want to work to make sure our hospital is here for future generations.

The fifth annual community-wide Ghouls' Night Out event has been modified this year to include goblins as well as ghouls,  and a new event known as Trunk-or-Treat - the latest twist on Oct. 31 door-to-door candy gathering.

Ghouls' and Goblins' Night Out: "Ghouls' and Goblins' Night out is just around the corner," said GD&T director Emily Moser, who’s been helping organize the event. “We’re looking forward to having everybody come out – and hopefully in costume!”

City awards $243,000 contract for RPD water main project

The Guttenberg city council met in regular session on Monday, Oct. 5. Mayor Russ Loven led councilmembers Virginia Saeugling, Fred Schaub, Dave Schlueter, Jane Parker and Steve Friedlein through the evening's agenda. City Manager Mary Willett and City Attorney Michael Schuster were also present at the council table.

Low income energy assistance

Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation (NEICAC) Family Service Offices began taking applications for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) on Oct. 1.

If your household applied for LIHEAP in the 2014-2015 LIHEAP program year, your applications can also be done online at: http://www.neicac.org/energy.html.

Clayton County residents may apply at the Clayton County Office Building, 600 Gunder Road NE, Elkader, phone (563) 245-2452.

Drill team supper

The Clayton Ridge Drill Team and their parents will hold the annual baked potato and chili supper on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the multi-purpose (lunchroom) of the elementary building in Guttenberg.

Baked potatoes with many toppings, chili, homemade bars, coffee and lemonade will be served.

Cost is $6, and tickets can be purchased from any CR Drill Team member and purchased at the door. Carry-outs will be available.

What’s antimicrobial, antibiotic, antiseptic, antifungal, antiviral, created by insects and consumed by humans? Honey. “We need the bees,” national honey princess Hayden Wolf told onlookers at Plagman Barn Show Days. “They pollinate about one-third of the food we eat.”

Two new providers join Cornerstone Family Practice

Cornerstone Family Practice welcomed two new providers last month, rounding out their roster to four physicians and four nurse practitioners. Tammi Noonan, DNP, and Anna Svennungsen, ARNP, have begun seeing patients and are enjoying their new positions.
