Farmers Market opens this weekend

The Guttenberg Farmers Market will open on Saturday, May 21, in the 400 block of downtown Guttenberg. Market hours are 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

Enjoy shopping for homegrown produce, honey, plants, coffee, homemade baked goods, crafts, candles, and more. In addition to favorite offerings from familiar vendors, look for some new additions. Dave Poggenklass will provide music this Saturday, weather permitting.

Umbrella Arts announces fire hydrant painting

It started with bicycles. They began popping up all over town in the summer of 2014, before RAGBRAI ended in Guttenberg. The bikes were mounted on balconies and rooftops, appearing in shop windows and on sidewalks, incorporated into garden landscapes and even given cleverly sculpted riders of all sorts. In the end, over 50 re-imagined bicycles decorated the city of Guttenberg that summer.

Cunningham recognized for character, academic performance

Guttenberg native JT Cunningham, son of Jim and Sharon Cunningham, received the Wendt Character and Wendt Character Athlete of the Year awards from the University of Dubuque this spring. He also earned a place on the Academic Dean’s List, the UD Academic All Team Members, and the IIAC Academic All-Americans.

“The thing I’m most proud of is not his wrestling career – it’s his character,” said JT’s father Jim.

Dental hygiene collection for Kenya

Helene Kuempel of Guttenberg will make her seventh and final trip to Kenya in June with Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) Health Ministry, and her granddaughter Sydney Kuempel's will make her first medical mission trip.

Twelve medical team members from all over the USA will be working with Kenya Medical Officers (who have two years of medical training) to serve 2,000-3,000 people in remote villages for five to six long days. All medication and care is free of charge.

Short agenda for city council

At its regular monthly meeting on May 2, the Guttenberg city council set a date to amend this year's budget, discussed the collective bargaining agreement and approved street closings for coming events.

Mayor Russ Loven led council members Steve Friedlein, Jane Parker, Virginia Saeugling, Fred Schaub and Austin Greve through the evening's agenda. Also present were City Manager Mary Willett and City Attorney Michael Schuster.

Experts comment on airborne crystalline silica

There was standing room only at the April 28 meeting of the frac sand mining impact study group, where special guests Dr. Patrick O’Shaughnessy and David Osterberg of the University of Iowa presented findings on the effects of silica sand on air quality. Many Guttenberg residents attended the meeting, held in Elkader, alongside landowners and neighbors of the potential future underground mines.

Imagine being five years old, and suddenly your mother disappears one evening after supper. She went upstairs to check on a strange noise in the house, and she never came back.

As if that isn't frightening enough, for the next five years of your young life, you are left in the care of a wicked old housekeeper and her nasty, troublemaking cat. During this time, your once-loving father slips into depression, losing himself in his work.

Reservations due May 29 for St. Mary/IC alumni banquet

St. Mary/ Immaculate Conception alumni committee invites all those who attended St. Mary High School and St. Mary Immaculate Conception Grade School to the annual alumni banquet on  Saturday,  June 4,  at St. Mary’s Brinkmann Hall in Guttenberg.

The Heritage Room  opens at 4 p.m.  Mass will be offered at 5:30 p.m., and a social hour and dinner will follow Mass in Brinkman Hall.  Dinner tickets are $10.

School board sets last day of school

The Clayton Ridge Community School Board of Directors met in special session on Wednesday, April 27. Members in attendance were John Heying, Alicia Helle, Mike Finnegan, Kathy Ihde, Christine Aulwes, Jason Reimer and Ellen Johnson.  Also in attendance were Shane Wahls, Andy Peterson, David Schlueter and Mary Seifert.

Board members named the last day of the 2015-16 school year as June 1 with a 2:30 p.m. dismissal and teacher in-service days held on June 2, 3 and 6.

High school senior Logan Bries of Guttenberg recently became the newest – and youngest – member of local historic preservation commission. He keeps his own ever-evolving collection of antique objects and documents, and has a genuine desire to get involved in the community.
