PromiseLand releases new wine

Guttenberg’s own PromiseLand Winery will unveil a brand new wine at GermanFest during a special wine release ceremony. Readers may be familiar with PromiseLand’s Crazy Girl, Cabin Fever, First Crush, and other varieties of sweet, semi-sweet, and dry wines; however, this month PromiseLand will introduce something completely different.

“People say all we do is farm,” says a young woman fishing on a set of docks. “They say there’s nothing to do here,” a couple kayaking tells the camera. “And all we grow is corn,” smiles a woman walking through grape vines with a glass of wine. “We’re in the right place to make memories,” say a group of campers enjoying a fire. “Come see our view in Guttenberg, Iowa,” a young family suggests, standing on the levee with the mighty Mississippi flowing past.

Plan now for fall city-wide sales

Guttenberg's annual city-wide fall garage sales will be held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 25-26. 

The Guttenberg Press will again serve as the sponsor of the event. The Sept. 23 issue of The Press will contain a page with all the garage sale ads grouped together. The ads will also appear in The Trader, an advertising publication with a circulation of more than 21,000. In addition, ads will appear on The Press website at www.guttenbergpress.com. See the ad in this week's issue for details on cost and ad deadline.

Loyce Dumke appointed Special Chief Deputy Auditor

The Clayton County Auditor Dennis Freitag has appointed Loyce Dumke of Edgewood as a Special Chief Deputy Auditor.  

On Aug. 24 the Clayton County Board of Supervisors authorized Freitag to appoint someone to the position.  Dumke will be in the position for 90 days.

Buechel Hill Trail improvements

When two storms hit the county hard last June, Clayton County was declared a disaster area. Buechel Hill Trail, which directly connects Bluff Street with Acre Street, was severely damaged by the storms – so when FEMA funds became available, the City of Guttenberg applied for funding for trail restoration under a Category G Trails Project. The trail had been badly washed out by the storms, making it a treacherous hike for walkers like Robyn and Dorothy Tangeman.

Plans are being finalized for Guttenberg’s 25th, annual GermanFest celebration, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 25 and Saturday, Sept. 26. With new committee members at the helm, participants can look forward to beloved traditions alongside new amusements. 

“In honor of the 25th anniversary of GermanFest, our committee has been hard at work planning some fresh activities, while continuing the spirit of the event,” says GD&T Director Emily Moser. “After many successful years, previous event organizers entrusted the festival to a group of capable volunteers, who are excited to take on the challenge.”

Labor Day can collection for Youth Football League

The Youth Football League will be conducting a can and bottle drive on Labor Day, Sept. 7. Youth League players are asking for the generous support of the community by setting out empty pop and beer cans on your doorstep for the players to pick up.   

Parents and players will be driving around the communities of Guttenberg and Garnavillo between 9 a.m. and 12 noon on Labor Day to collect the bottles and cans. Trailers will also be set up for people to drop off cans in the parking lots of Guttenberg Industries and the old Double LL parking lot in Garnavillo.

Public invited to hear motivational speaker at Clayton Ridge Sept. 2

Motivational speaker Al Kerns will be the guest speaker on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Clayton Ridge High School, presenting a half-hour presentation to students on “Doing What’s Right.” The program will begin at 9 a.m. in the high school gymnasium and is free; the public is encouraged to attend. Afterwards, Kerns will give another presentation to the faculty for their in-service day at the school.

Blood drive Aug. 28

The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive on Friday, Aug. 28, from 1-6  p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 203 Pearl Street, Guttenberg. Donations are needed now to help ensure blood is available for patients in need.

Municipal election filing opens

Filing is now open for candidates seeking city offices in the Nov. 3 election. In Guttenberg, two city council seats, two park board positions and three seats on the hospital board are up for election.

On the city council, the terms of Jane Parker and Virginia Saeugling are expiring at the end of the year. Also up for election are the seats of park board members Jim Johnston and Mary Streich and hospital board members Mary Eulberg, Penny Hansel and Bill Allyn.
