City council sets March budget hearing

The Guttenberg city council at its monthly meeting on Feb. 13 set a public hearing for next year's budget,  heard an update on the dog park and approved membership in the County Emergency Response Team.

Mayor Fred Schaub led councilmembers Michelle Geuder, Steve Bahls, Jane Parker, Austin Greve and Mandy Ludovissy through the agenda. City Manager Denise Schneider was also at the council table.

Solar transformation assisted by CCED

A chance encounter while dining out was the catalyst that prompted Steve and Dr. Michele Dikkers to install a solar energy system for their home. Steve, a retired Clayton Ridge science teacher, has always been interested in energy and land conservation. 

"My wife and I were dining out in Dubuque and the waitress approached our table and asked, 'Where was the popcorn ball invented?" he began.

County Energy District open house Feb. 17

The Clayton County Energy District will host an Energy Burden Relief Open House & Listening Post on Friday, Feb. 17, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Keystone AEA, 1400 Second Street NW, in Elkader.

The event will showcase local clean energy success stories, provide opportunities to speak with energy experts and clean energy contractors, and share resources available to relieve energy burdens (i.e., utility rebates, major Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) cash incentives, 30% solar and heat pump tax credits, and more).

After over 75 years in the mortuary business, Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home and Crematory Services, located at 201 S. 1st Street in Guttenberg is pleased to announce the sale of their third-generation business to Brock and Darris Morris of Manchester.

In honor of Valentine's Day The Guttenberg Press would like to share the story of a love that lasts.

Iris and Robert "Bob" Dohse met over 73 years ago at the McGregor Hotel Restaurant owned by Bob's mother. Iris had her own beauty shop in the hotel complex and admired her future husband while she watched him peel potatoes.

Pickleball is a fun sport that combines many of the same elements as tennis, badminton and ping-pong, and is gaining popularity in the United States. The Association of Pickleball Professionals reported from August 2021 to August 2022 more than 36.5 million people played pickleball.

Paws on Your Heart success stories

This fall ITAVARR took in four pups diagnosed with parvovirus, a deadly disease that is expensive and time-consuming to treat. Through around-the-clock care at their foster home, and a dedicated veterinarian, all four pups were treated and survived. (Photo submitted)

Pet rescue services, of which there are few, operate with never-enough funding from a limited number of sources. Adoption fees cover only a small fraction of rescue expenses. Donations and other funding are needed to cover the rest.

County paging, radio system replacement

Clayton County 911 Service Board contracted with MCM Consulting Group, Inc. in January of 2022 to evaluate the existing public safety paging and radio system. This project also identified the needs, improvements, and opportunities for replacement of the infrastructure.

“The goal is to increase coverage and reliability for our public safety partners,” said a spokesperson for the Clayton County Board of Supervisors and the 911 Service Board.
