August E. 'Gene' Riley

August Eugene Riley, 86, of McGregor, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 2020, at Great River Care Center in McGregor. He was born Feb. 19, 1934, to John J. and Pearl (Laufer) Riley, both of McGregor. He was raised in Sny Magill, where he attended school before graduating from McGregor High School.

Lorraine R. Ayers

Lorraine Ruth Ayers, 86, of McGregor, passed away on Friday, Dec. 4, 2020, at Great River Care Center in McGregor. Lorraine was born June 30, 1934 to Elmer and Elsie (Schave) Brainard in Frankville, and attended school in Postville.  

Lorraine was united in marriage with LaVern Ayers on Nov. 15, 1952. Throughout the years, she worked as a CNA for Prairie Convalescence Center, Beaumont Group Home and Homeward Bound. Lorraine was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in McGregor, where she was an organist for many years. When her children were young, Lorraine was a Cub Scout den mother and taught Sunday school. She enjoyed garden canning, bowling on a league, going on trips, dining out and playing cards with friends and family.

Ashley M. Plagman

Ashley Marie Plagman, 27, of Waukon, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 2020, at Gundersen Health in La Crosse, Wis. She was born Sept. 20, 1993, to Peter and Brenda (Potter) Plagman in Elkader. Ashley graduated from Postville High School in 2012, where she participated in cross country, basketball, volleyball and cheerleading. She was also in the talented and gifted program, Upward Bound, at Luther in Decorah. Ashley continued her education at NEICC and NIACC.

Leo J. Schaefers

Leo Joseph Schaefers, 93, of McGregor, died on Tuesday, Dec. 1, at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon. Leo was born on Dec. 4, 1926, in Garnavillo, to Casper and Mary (Lucher) Schaefers. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph Catholic Church and also attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Garnavillo.

Lila E. Schellhammer Weipert

Lila Eleanor Schellhammer Weipert, 89, of McGregor, died Monday, Nov. 30, 2020, at Great River Care Center in McGregor. She was born April 3, 1931, to George and Minnie (Uren) Schellhammer in Lansing. Lila attended country school and later earned her G.E.D.

On Nov. 13, 1947, Lila was united in marriage with Francis Weipert in Lansing.

Lila was known for baking pies, bread and cookies. She enjoyed watching the Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs. Her favorite pastime was spending time with family.

Laura R. Scott

Laura R. Scott, 70, died Nov. 22, 2020, peacefully at home surrounded by the love of her family. She put up a long, courageous fight against breast cancer. Laura was from Elkader, but had been a longtime Cedar Rapids resident. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in education from Upper Iowa University and was employed with the College Community School District as a school teacher for 13 years before she retired in 2013. She was also an active member of First Assembly of God Church in Cedar Rapids, where she was a Sunday school teacher and actively involved with the youth programs. Laura loved spending time with her family whenever possible and couldn’t wait to have her grandkids over so she could spoil them. We were truly blessed to have such a warm and loving person in our lives.  She will be missed!

Olga M. Corlett

Olga Mae Corlett, 88 of McGregor, entered the gates of heaven Thursday, Nov. 26, 2020, at Great River Care Center in McGregor. Olga Mae was born April 5, 1932, to Ernest and Sarah Margaret (Halverson) Eggen in McGregor. She was raised in Sny Magill where she attended school before graduating from McGregor High School in 1949. 

Olga was united in marriage with Ralph J. Corlett on Oct. 1, 1949, at First Lutheran Church in McGregor. The two then took over the homestead in Sny Magill where they raised 10 children together.

Don R. Schmidt

Don R. Schmidt passed away peacefully on Nov. 21, 2020. Don was born in Elkader to Agnes Eleanor (Johnson) Schmidt and George Harold Schmidt Sr. on June 26, 1925. In his early years, the family business was a hometown pharmacy, where George Sr. was the proprietor and pharmacist and Agnes worked the books. Many of Don’s longest, strongest and dearest friendships were formed from his years growing up in Elkader and working with his father.

Eldean Wilke

Eldean August William Wilke, 86, of Elkader, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020, at the Elkader Care Center. He was born Aug. 22, 1934, in Read Township, rural Elkader, the son of Eldo and Marie (Staack) Wilke. He received his education at a country school. Eldean served in the United States Army for two years, stationed at Bitburg, Germany.

He was married Feb. 2, 1960, to Ivanelle Boehm at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkader by Pastor Harold Heupel. To this union, two daughters were born, Linette (James) Langhus and Lisa (David) Pope.

Eldean worked for Grau Logs and Lumber for 40 years; following his retirement, he worked 12 years for the city of Elkader. Eldean enjoyed camping, wood carving, ginseng hunting, listening to music and spending time with his family.

Donald D. Blaker

Donald Dean Blaker, age 89, entered into his eternal rest on Friday, Nov. 20, 2020, at his home near Arlington. He was diagnosed with stage four melanoma in mid-October. 

Don was born in Colesburg on July 12, 1931, the son of Dale and Vera (Shaw) Blaker. He graduated from Fayette High School in 1949 and served in the Korean War as a member of the U.S. Army. Following his military service, he attended Upper Iowa University and later received his master’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa. On June 4, 1960, he married Anita Van Horn at the Fayette Methodist Church.
