Edward J. Laufer

 

Edward J. Laufer died on Jan. 8, at his home in Omaha, Neb. surrounded by loved ones. 

Ed was born Nov. 22, 1921, the fifth of sixth children born to John and Nellie Laufer. His birth occurred in Hettinger, N.D. where he was the first of two sons to follow four daughters. 

He is the last surviving member of his immediate family. In 2012, he was preceded in death by beloved spouse Edith, who left this world just shy of their 70th wedding anniversary. He is also preceded in death by five siblings and many other family members.

Jackson Neal Baty

 

 Jackson Neal Baty, 90, of Cedar Falls, Iowa passed peacefully on Jan. 12, while attempting to recover from a broken hip. 

He was born on June 18, 1925 to Eben and Emma (Jackson) Baty in Chicago, Ill.

He will be fondly remembered as a newspaperman, educator, and encourager of others. Jackson was a cowboy at heart with a passion for learning, living, and exploring. He was a generous person who gave willingly of his time and resources to help others. He smoked a pipe for many years and was known lovingly as the “Old Puffer.”

Janice Le Rhea Mae (Cahalan) McGeough-Donahue, 78, of Guttenberg, formerly of Waterville, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, at Guttenberg Care Center in Guttenberg, Iowa. Janice was born on Nov. 14, 1937 to Woodrow and Gretta (Huffman) Cahalan in rural Harpers Ferry. She attended Smoky Hallow Country School, Marquette Grade School and Waukon High School.

Loras John Kluesner

 

Loras John Kluesner, 75, of Marquette, Iowa, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, at Prairie Maison, Prairie du Chien. 

Loras John was born Aug. 2, 1940 in Farley, Iowa, to Joe and Norma (Schute) Kluesner. He graduated from MFL High School in 1958. After high school, Loras enlisted into the United States Air Force and served his country for six years.

Severna A. DaVelaar

 

Severna A. DaVelaar, 98, formerly of Waterloo and Evansdale, died Saturday, Oct. 24, at Sunrise Hill Care & Rehab Center, Traer.

She was born May 20, 1917, in Ridgeway, daughter of Severn and Anna Langan Olson. She married Lester Pillard in 1936 and they later divorced. She married John W. DaVelaar on Aug. 11, 1945, in Galena, Ill.; he died March 27, 2003.

A 1934 graduate of McGregor High School, Severna and her husband owned and operated both Jax Tavern and Evansdale Furniture Store for 20 years, retiring in 1970.

Norma Catherine (Schoulte) Mitchell

 

Norma Catherine (Schoulte) Mitchell, 82, of Prairie du Chien, passed away on Friday, Oct. 16, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, due to complications of a stroke. 

She was born on Sept. 22, 1933 in Farmersburg Township to Oliver and Lydia (Handke) Schoulte.

She grew up on the family farm near National and this is where she developed her life-long love of plants and birds.

Lois Ruth Knapp, 89, of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Postville, died on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Stone Hill Care Center in Dubuque. 

Lois was born on May 27, 1926 to Glen and Amy Zoe (White) Tindell in Guttenberg. 

Lois was united in marriage with Donald LeRoy Knapp on June 25, 1946 at the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville. To this union a daughter, Amy Zoe Knapp, was born.

Robert James Gerndt, 77, of McGregor, Iowa died Saturday, September 19, 2015 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 23, 2015 from 3-7 pm at Thornburg- Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in McGregor, Iowa and one hour before services at the funeral home on Thursday.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in McGregor, Iowa.

Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, McGregor, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Robert’s honor, may be directed to the MarMac EMS or McGregor Hook and Ladder No. 1.
