Christine Lerch
August 29, 1964 to June 22, 2018

Christine Ladawn Lerch, 53, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Friday, June 22, 2018 after a courageous battle with cancer. Through it all, she kept her faith, positive attitude, and always put her family and friends first. A visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. Sunday, July 8, 2018, at New City Church, 5335 Midway Drive NW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52405. A memorial service will be held there at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 9.
Christine was born August 29, 1964, the daughter of Donald and Donna (Ellis) Winn, in Tuscan, AZ. She graduated from Prairie High School in 1982, where she played softball and basketball. She continued to serve on her class reunion committee throughout the years. On May 2, 1992, she was married to Lonny Lerch in Cedar Rapids. Christine worked as a logistics manager for West Side Transport in Cedar Rapids. She was a member of New City Church in Cedar Rapids where she spent a great deal of her time volunteering.

Benjamin Zuercher

Benjamin Zuercher
August 31, 1932 to June 23, 2018

Benjamin Franklin Zuercher, 85, of Garber, IA, died Saturday, June 23, 2018, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital. He was born on August 31, 1932, in Arlington, the son of Louis Sr. and Gladys Zuercher.
Ben received his education from the country schools and later from the Fayette public school. On April 21, 1954, Ben was united in marriage Mildred Rose Althoff at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Luxemburg. For many years, Ben farmed and drove truck in the construction industry. He was a long-time member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Garber until it closed and since has been a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Elkader. Ben enjoyed volunteering at George Meier Heritage Museum all the way up to this year. He also enjoyed fishing, gathering and shelling nuts, telling stories and jokes and spending time with family and friends.

Edna Grace Thiese

Edna Grace Thiese, 101, passed away June 23, 2018 at Elkader Care Center, due to natural causes.
Edna was born March 18, 1917, near Independence, IA, the middle one of three daughters to Clarence and Lela Zimpfer. During her childhood, she moved to Oelwein, Volga, Garber, and Elkader with her parents, wherever her father could find employment, helping with farming.
Edna Zimpfer attended and graduated from the Elkader School. She attended Junior College in Elkader after winning a one year scholarship. She earned her teaching certificate after completing two years at Junior College. She found employment teaching in a country school in rural Elkader, near the home of Dorothy and Herman Thiese. She met their son, Oliver, while she was a boarder at the Thiese home. Oliver proved to be a real gentleman in helping Edna load firewood into the schoolhouse’s wood stove on cold winter mornings. He also assisted in repairing books.

Leslie C. Klink, 91, of Elkader, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, June 22, 2018 in Elkader. A celebration of life was held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2018, at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader, with Rev. Jon Haack officiating. The family greeted friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at Peace United Church of Christ, and also one hour prior to the service at the church.

Milo Frieden February 4, 1933 to June 16, 2018

Milo W. Frieden, 85, of Prairie du Chien, WI, formerly of Elgin, IA passed away Saturday, June 16, 2018, at Great River Care Center in McGregor, Iowa. Milo William was born February 4, 1933, to William and Eliza (Moore) Frieden in Elkader, IA. He attended school in Elgin. Milo joined and proudly served in the United States Army. 

Milo was united in marriage with Marilyn DeWitte on April 28, 1954, in Arlington, Iowa.  He farmed the family farm in the Elgin area for many years. Milo also worked at the Casino in Marquette, Iowa for eleven years, retiring in 2006.

Pearl Diane West Lamphier-Dunkel, 75, of Strawberry Point passed away June 2, 2018, at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home. Pearl was born March 2, 1943, to Orville and Ruby (Bark) West in Clayton County, Highland Township, Iowa. She graduated from Elkader High School in 1961.

She married Garry Lamphier on July 15, 1961. They made their home in Center Point, Iowa. The couple had two sons.  Opening their home up to the neighborhood children, she was known for her cooking, babysitting, and Friday night pizza. They later divorced.

Sherry Whitford

Sherry Kay Whitford, 53, of Saint Peters, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, from complications associated with multiple myeloma cancer (diagnosed in 2013) at Barnes Jewish Hospital in Saint Louis, MO. Sherry was born in Cedar Rapids, IA on December 4, 1964, to Vernon W. Shaw, Jr. and Karen Mae (Stroschein) Shaw. She graduated from Central Community High School in Elkader, Iowa in 1983. During her lifetime, Sherry lived in many places including: Iowa, New Hampshire, Canada, Michigan, Illinois, and Missouri.
Sherry was united in marriage with Bradley T. Whitford on February 18, 1989, in Elkader, Iowa. Two children were born to this union, Emily Ann and Wesley Nolan.

Erwin Ruff

Erwin Ruff, 92, of McGregor, Iowa died Friday, May 25, 2018 at his home in McGregor, Iowa in the care of his family. He was born on May 28, 1925 to Edmund and Clara (Berns) Ruff in National, Iowa. Erwin joined the United States Army, served in World War II and was honorably discharged.

Erwin was united in marriage with Eileen Agnes Connor on September 8, 1951 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Monona, Iowa. Eight children were born to this union. Together they farmed outside of McGregor, Iowa and were active members of St. Mary’s Parish.
