Marie Erickson

Marie Alice (Belschner) Erickson Shea, 98, formerly of Volga, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2019, at the Elkader Care Center. Marie was born June 3, 1921, at home four miles north of Hawkeye by the Turkey River. She was the daughter of Lillian (Hoepfner) and Richard Belschner. She had an older brother, Ervin, and younger brother, Harold. Marie was baptized and confirmed at the Hawkeye Lutheran Church, Hawkeye.

She was very athletic and played basketball all four years of high school. She was chosen captain her senior year and named top guard in Fayette County. Marie graduated from Hawkeye High School in 1939.

She joined the Catholic religion a year before her marriage to William Elbert Erickson on February 6, 1946, at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union. Five children were born to this union. William passed away on October 31, 1966. She later married Loy Shea at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Volga, on September 22, 1973. Loy passed away January 12, 1985.

James Olinger

James Olinger

James Lewis Olinger, 88, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, July 7, 2019, at his home. He was born on August 19, 1930, in Strawberry Point, the son of Paul and Nellie (Farmer) Olinger. James received his education in the Strawberry Point Schools.  

On December 26, 1957, James was united in marriage to Mary Marlene Avis at St. John Catholic Church in Coggon. Four children were born to this union.  James was a lifelong farmer.  

James was also a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Strawberry Point. He enjoyed square dancing, as well as playing cards and games.

Delvin “Del” Dale Tieden, Sr., 64, of rural Elkader, died Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at MercyOne Health System in Elkader. He was born in McGregor, to Duane and Margaret “Darlene” Entwisle Tieden. Del was baptized and confirmed at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader.

Del attended Central Community School, Elkader. He was united in marriage to Karen Roeder on December 15, 1979, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Del worked many years as a hired man for Richard Troester, Alto Kelly, and George Leonard. He also worked on the family farm until his parents retired from farming. Del was employed as a construction worker running heavy equipment for Carlsons, Tesar, and Moynas. He was especially happy driving semi trucks for Ray’s Excavating until he finally retired.

Florence Pauline Amelia Bruns, 100, of Monona, Iowa, died Monday, July 1, 2019, at Good Samaritan Society in Waukon, Iowa. Florence was born May 1, 1919 to Emil and Amelia (Schultz) Aulerich on the family farm two miles west of Monona. She was baptized May 18, 1919, by Rev. Albert Daugs and also confirmed by him August 27, 1933, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona. Florence graduated from Luana High School in 1936, and attended Iowa State Teachers College.

Florence was united in marriage with Otmar H. Bruns on November 25, 1937, at St. Paul Lutheran Church by Rev. H.W. Siefkes. Two sons were born to this union: Gary Otmar and Brent Louis. The couple farmed southwest of Monona, along with having an insurance business. They moved to Monona in August 1964.

Evan Drew Coobs passed away on June 24, 2019, in Champaign, Illinois. He was 55 years old.

Evan was born on November 11, 1963, in Oelwein, Iowa, the son of Edward W. Coobs and Doris A. (Rodenberg) Coobs.  He graduated from Central High School, Elkader, Iowa, (1982), the University of Iowa College of Business (Accounting) and the University of Iowa College of Law (1989).

He was married to Karen Marie (McGann) Coobs in Peoria, Illinois on July 4, 1987.  He is survived by Karen and their children, Evan Drew (Marie) Coobs II; Abigail Marie (Kale) Brinkoetter; and Katherine Anne (Jacob) Chesnut, and grandchildren Kayla Jo Coobs and Evan Drew Coobs III; siblings Earl Coobs, Donna Strange, Eric Coobs, and Cory Coobs; and numerous aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Amalie Beth “Betsy” Zein, 71, of Elkader, died Tuesday, June 25, 2019, at The Bird House – Hospice Home of Johnson County in Iowa City. She was born July 22, 1947, in Elkader to Horace “H.K.” and Helen (Lenth) Roggensack.

Betsy graduated from Elkader High School in 1965. Following high school, she attended Wartburg College, graduating with degrees in English and Biology. She was united in marriage to Elias Zein and lived in the Los Angeles and Phoenix areas for a time before he passed away.

Funeral services were Friday, June 28th at 11 a.m. at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader, IA.  Burial followed in the East Side Cemetery at Elkader. Visitation for Vadena was Friday at the church from 9:30-11:00 a.m.

Charlene Culbertson, 81, of Elkader, Iowa formerly of Vinton, Iowa died Saturday, June 15, 2019, surrounded by her family. Charlene was born April 28, 1938, to Leon and Vera Meredith in Vinton, Iowa.

Charlene was united in marriage with Cletus Schoeberl in 1958. To this union two children were born, Lynne and Kent. After Cletus passed away, she married Glenn “Mick” Culbertson in 1970. They later divorced.  Charlene was employed at State Bank of Vinton for 30 years. After retirement, she worked at Wal-Mart. In 2002, Charlene moved to Elkader and continued working part-time. On April 3, 2019, she moved into Edgewood Convalescent Home. Charlene enjoyed helping people and loved to watch her grandson, Lane show horses and play football.

Charlene is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lynne (Schoeberl) and John McGreal of Strawberry Point, Iowa; grandson, Lane McGreal of Strawberry Point, Iowa; and one brother, Charles Meredith of Vinton, Iowa.

Robert “Bob” Walke, 77, of Guttenberg, IA, died Wednesday, June 19, 2019. He was born on January 6, 1942, in Communia, IA, the son of Kenneth and Eunice (Zittergruen) Walke. 

Bob was baptized and confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elkport. He graduated from the Guttenberg High School and furthered his education at Wartburg College. For many years Bob tilled the land on his family’s farm outside of Guttenberg until his retirement.
