Hoppers edge Viroqua in 10 innings

The Prairie du Chien Grasshoppers American Legion baseball team ran off with the lead late in the game in a 2-1 victory over Viroqua on a sweltering Friday night. The game was tied at one with Prairie du Chien batting in the top of the 10th when Drake Coleman doubled on a 3-2 count, scoring what turned out to be the winning run.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Prairie du Chien pitchers struck out six, while Viroqua pitchers sat down 16.

Prairie du Chien hosts Regional American Legion Tournament

 

The American Legion Varsity Regional Tournament is being held at the St. Feriole Island Ballpark. The tournament began on a hot and humid Friday afternoon and will continue through Monday, July 22.

The first game began at 3 p.m. on Friday. Stoddard defeated Gays Mills 9-0 in the double elimination tournament.

Fennimore won a wild affair against Westby-Coon Valley 14-13 in the second game.

Five players, one family to be inducted into Eastman Fast Pitch Hall of Fame


The Carl and Marlene Achenbach family is being inducted as Friends of the Game.

 

Five players and a Friends of the Game family will be inducted into the Eastman Fast Pitch Hall of Fame on July 4 at 4 p.m. at the Eastman Ballpark.

The Prairie du Chien Blackhawks defeated third-seeded Fennimore 2-1 to claim the WIAA Regional championship on Wednesday in Prairie du Chien in high school baseball action. The victory advances the Blackhawks to the WIAA Sectional games to be played in Brodhead on Tuesday, June 4. 

Down 1-0 in the bottom of the second, the Blackhawks scored their first run to tie the game. Ryan McGrath started the inning with a single followed by a single by Dylan Coleman. Pinch runner Josh Dyer scored from third on a ground ball by Mark Welter.

Four area high school track and field athletes competed in the State Track and Field Championships at UW-La Crosse on Friday and Saturday.

Ritchie, Teynor on to State Track

The Blackhawk track and field athletes that made it to the East Troy Sectional and got themselves ready for the day with a nice quiet drive. 

Kori Jaynes got things rolling with a nice 100m dash and just missed her career PR by 1/10th of a second, finishing the season in 10th place. Faith Dillman was up next in the 100 High Hurdles and finished the day in 12th place with a 17.94. Ben Teynor was up next in the 110 High Hurdles. Ben hit a 15.80 and qualified for the finals. Ben then hit a career PR - 15.42 in the finals and just missed out on going to state by 1/100th of a second, finishing in 6th place.

The Wauzeka-Steuben softball team won 6-5 over visiting and fourth-seeded De Soto Thursday, May 23 in regional softball action.

Top-seeded Wauzeka-Steuben improved their overall record to 21-0 and advanced to the sectional semifinal against second-seeded Highland at Wauzeka on May 28 beginning at 4:30 p.m.

The winning pitcher was Tabitha Check. She gave up 5 runs on 7 hits, while fanning 6 and walking 4.

Top seeded Prairie du Chien came from behind to get past visiting and fourth seeded Wisconsin Heights 4-3 in a regional semifinal baseball game Tuesday afternoon.

Heights took the early lead by scoring a run in the top of the second inning and another in the third to go up 2-0.

Prairie scored 2 runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2.
