Stout defense, physical run game propel MFL MarMac past Ed-Co

MFL MarMac’s ground game was one reason for the team’s 22-14 win over Edgewood-Colesburg on Oct. 30. The Bulldogs combined for 357 rushing yards, including 154 yards and a touchdown from fullback Gabe McGeough (22)—an effort that put him over 1,000 yards on the season. “Our backs ran hard,” against Ed-Co, said MFL MarMac head coach Dan Anderson, “and the linemen were firing off and doing enough to hold their blocks against a fast, physical team.” Hunter Meyer, shown here blocking for running back Cullen McShane, was part of that effort.

The MFL MarMac football team extended its playoff run Oct. 30, using the combination of a stellar defensive effort and physical run game to defeat Edgewood-Colesburg 22-14.

“These are the exciting ones you remember,” said head coach Dan Anderson. “We knew it would be a good game that, if everyone played well, it would be a one-score game. And it was.”

“Too bad one team had to be done,” he added. “These are two really good football teams. I have a little empathy—we’ve been here before. We know what it feels like and it hurts.”

Grau participates in state cross country meet

MFL MarMac freshman Clare Grau competed in the state cross country meet at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge on Oct. 31, finishing 43rd in the Class 1A race.

She was MFL MarMac’s first cross country athlete to run at state in six years.

“I couldn’t be more proud of her,” said head coach Eric Koenig. “She ran a 21:34 and placed 43rd out of 152 of the top runners in Class 1A in the state. That’s nothing to hang your head about.”

Pensel, Wille earn all-conference honorable mention recognition

Two Central volleyball players—Ava Pensel and Maddy Wille—have received Upper Iowa Conference all-conference honorable mentions.

On the season, Pensel played in 23 matches and started 18 of them, and was the driving force on the offense, leading the team in assists, with 222, and kills, with 27. She also shined defensively, tying for second on the team with seven blocks and coming in third in digs, with 66. When it came to serving, no one did it better than Pensel, who led the Warriors in attempts (193), serve success (165) and serve aces (36). Her 85.5 percent serve efficiency was one of the highest marks on the team.

Five MFL MarMac volleyball players have earned Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) all-conference honors. Riley Moreland and Lexy Johnson were both named to the first team and Kayden Gillitzer to the second team, while Lakota Morrissey and Grace Anderson picked up honorable mention nods.

Grau punches ticket to state cross country

Cadence Weber ran the district course in 25:48.3, putting her in 43rd place.

Kylee Bries and Cody Moses came in 74th and 75th, respectively.

Clare Grau picked a good time to turn in her top finish of the cross country season, placing seventh at the district meet in Guttenberg on Oct. 23, and advancing on to the state contest. 

The MFL MarMac freshman posted a time of 21:17.4, 10 seconds faster than her previous season best. She’s the first Bulldog to punch a ticket to state since Hannah Schutte in 2015.

Race conditions on Friday were less than ideal. After being delayed a day due to rain, the meet packed a cold and windy punch for runners.

Bulldogs outlast East Buchanan 37-24 to advance to third round

Cullen McShane continued to power the MFL MarMac offense, picking up 166 yards on the ground and 45 through the air, and scoring four touchdowns.

Bulldog quarterback completed just four passes against East Buchanan, but he made them count, throwing two touchdowns.

It’s on to the round of 16 for the MFL MarMac football team, which outlasted East Buchanan 37-24 in a second-round playoff match-up Oct. 23.

“Every week it’s going to get tougher,” said head coach Dan Anderson. “We knew these guys would be tougher than some of our last opponents. They were big, physical kids—even more physical than our guys gave them credit for at first.”

“We did enough to win,” he added. “It wasn’t always pretty, but you don’t have to be pretty.”

Warrior cross country season comes to heartbreaking conclusion

The Central cross country season is over, and for the first time in 21 years, the school will not be represented at the state meet. The outcome is a by-product of changes to state qualifying, COVID-19 and the loss of the team’s top two runners due to contact tracing, a development that marred the season finale. 

The runners who were at the district meet at Clayton Ridge on Oct. 23 performed, enduring through the situation and epitomizing the “Warrior Strong” ethos. 

On the girls side, decimated by the loss of two stars and six other runners, the Warriors had no chance to qualify for state as a team.

Sumner-Fred cuts MFL MarMac’s playoff run short

The MFL MarMac volleyball team’s playoff run was cut short last week, as the Bulldogs were beaten by Sumner-Fredericksburg just two days after an opening round victory over South Winneshiek.

The Bulldogs hosted South Winn on Oct. 19, sweeping the fellow Upper Iowa Conference team 3-0.  They dominated the game, winning the opening set 25-18 and the final two by scores of 25-14.

Riley Moreland led MFL MarMac at the net, with nine kills and one of the team’s two blocks. Kayden Gillitzer tallied seven kills, while Aleyna Rodriguez contributed five, and Karli Tilson added one kill and one block.

Central's season ends with playoff loss

The Central volleyball season came to an end Oct. 19, as the Warriors lost their playoff opener against the Tripoli Panthers in straight sets, 25-19, 25-19 and 25-17. They finished the 2020 season with a record of 3-20. 

Against the Panthers, the offense was productive, but ultimately outplayed. Ava Pensel, like clockwork, led the team in assists with 14, while Chelsia Larson added one. 

When it came to kills, the Warriors had one of their best games of the year, with 19 kills on 62 attempts and only 14 kill errors. Brandy Beatty led the team with eight kills, while Isabelle Groth had four, Pensel and Lexi Loan each had two and Kaitlyn Wiley, Larson and Maddy Wille each scored one.

Central volleyball has tough week

The Central volleyball team suffered another winless stretch last week, dropping both matches—one a hard-fought back and forth battle against Postville and the other in straight sets against Turkey Valley. 

Against 3-14 Postville on Oct. 13, the Warriors lost each of the first two sets by 25-23 scores before digging deep to pull out the next two sets 25-11 and 25-17). However, they succumbed in the fifth, losing 15-12. It was a competitive match and one of the Warriors’ best statistically of the season.
