The Central boys basketball team suffered another defeat last week, losing 64-41 to MFL MarMac on Dec. 22. The game came down to the Bulldog defense and missed opportunities for the Warriors.

“MFL played solid man defense throughout the game. While they made our job difficult by taking away easy shots, there were also shots that we missed that frankly were quality looks,” coach Brady Stramer said.

Central’s offense was stifled, shooting only 23.4 percent from the field and 17.2 percent on three pointers, which comes out to making only five of 29 attempts. Conversely, MFL MarMac shot over 40 percent in both categories.

MFL MarMac went on a 15-11 run in the third quarter, though, to take a one-point lead heading into the fourth period. The Bulldogs then out-scored the Hawks 13-8 in the final minutes to claim the narrow victory.

Riley Moreland had yet another big night for MFL MarMac, turning in 25 points and eight rebounds, along with three assists, three steals and a block.

Starting with the meet at Tripoli on Dec. 15, the team won two of three match-ups, defeating Central City and Tripoli, while losing to Starmont. Against Central City, the Warriors won 36-18, with 126-pound Nick Deitchler providing the lone wrestling victory with a pin over Central City’s Lexi Henncik in 1:54. The other victories all came via forfeit. The team also suffered two defeats, when Brand Beatty (132 pounds) and Sam Fettkether (160 pounds) both lost via pin.

The Central boys basketball team started last week with an impressive hard-fought win against Central City, 48-45, but unfortunately dropped the next two contests: a close loss against Turkey Valley, 57-47, followed by a lopsided one against South Winneshiek, 77-44.

Coming off a week where the undersized team practiced rebounding and communication and minimizing turnovers, the Warriors made it all work against Central City. While the team came out a little flat, in the words of Coach Brady Stramer, they turned it on in the second quarter, taking a one-point lead into halftime.

MFL MarMac boys fly past Kee

By Audrey Posten, Times-Register

The MFL MarMac boys basketball team defeated Kee 68-57 on Dec. 15, improving its overall record to 2-3.

The biggest quarter of the night was the first, as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 21-8 lead. By halftime, it was 37-23. Kee cut into the advantage in the third quarter, with a 16-12 run, but couldn’t overcome the early deficit.

The Bulldogs out-shot the Hawks by 12 percentage points in the game—48.9 percent versus 36.7 percent. The teams made the same amount of shots, at 22, but MFL MarMac was able to hit that mark in 15 fewer attempts.

There’s an old adage that says “girls can do anything boys can do,” and at Central, they are leading the way in bringing that to fruition. Since last year, the school has been promoting and slowly building a girls wrestling team, something both head coach Joe Koehn and activities director Aaron Reinhart have been strongly behind.

While Central doesn’t have an official girls program, the overall program, which is predominantly male, features several female athletes who compete alongside the boys.

Against the Eagles, Central’s defense was strong, holding Clayton Ridge to nine points or less in the first three periods and forcing 20 turnovers.

Delaney Scherf led the team in the scoring column with 24 points, and Haley Frieden added 15 points on the night. Ashlyn Scherf had seven points off the bench and Hannah Asche was good for three. Fern Diersen, Carly Kluesner and Abby Cummer each had two points.

Bulldogs win three more duals, place second at Nashua-Plainfield Tourney

By Audrey Posten, Times-Register

The MFL MarMac wrestling team continued to perform well last week, winning three more duals and placing second at the Nashua-Plainfield Tournament.

The three dual victories came in a meet at Edgewood-Colesburg on Dec. 8. The Bulldogs started the night by defeating a tough Beckman-Catholic squad 44-36.

“They took care of us pretty good last year, and they’ve got some good kids who’ll be right there at the end,” said head coach Chet Bachman. “So it was nice to beat them.”
