Masonic Block can inspire adaptive reuse of McGregor buildings

Community leaders believe the newly renovated Masonic Block can serve as inspiration for the adaptive reuse of McGregor’s historical buildings. A three-year, a multi-million-dollar effort transformed the 1860s building with derelict second and third floors into 11 modern apartments and three commercial spaces. (Photos by Audrey Posten)

The 11 apartments all have unique floor plans. “1 believe these units are proof that historic preservation, even when designed according to the Secretary of the Interior’s guidelines, does not have to result in dark, dreary, museum-like rooms. Instead, you will find bright spaces with modern floor plans, lighting and state-of-the-art kitchens,” said Duane Boelman, chair of the McGregor Historic Preservation Commission.

The building still incorporates much of the Masonic Block’s historic character, including this mural from the Masonic Hall. Many original pocket doors and tin and wood ceilings remain in the building, original wood floors were refinished and original windows were restored.

Many of the tin and wood ceilings remain in the building.

Doors and door hardware add unique touches to the Masonic Block living spaces.

This upper story apartment shows some of the exposed brickwork in the Masonic Block, as well as the view onto McGregor's Main Street and toward the Mississippi River.

This is one of three ground level commercial spaces in the Masonic Block. Currently, one commercial space and one apartment have been rented.
