Dale Jerome Wright, 82, of Garnavillo, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2021, at the Guttenberg Hospital. He was born Aug. 16, 1939, in McGregor, to Owen and Amy (Miller) Wright. He was baptized and confirmed at the First Congregational Church in McGregor. Dale graduated from Garnavillo Community School. He served in the National Guard.

Jean Ann Smith, 94, Monona, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2021, at Garden View in Monona. Jean was born Aug. 26, 1927, to Harva O. and Veryl (Nichols) Miller at the Miller homestead near Postville. She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith. Jean attended rural country school in Allamakee for eight years and graduated from Luana High School in 1944. Jean furthered her education at Cornell College in Mount Vernon.

School of the Wild immerses MFL MarMac fifth graders in nature

Bentley Henkes proudly shows off his journal, including a recent sketch of a frog. “They’re listing what they find, describing what they find, taking a closer look and sketching it," explained Alicia Mullarkey, director of Marquette's Driftless Area Wetlands Centre.

Ashton Winkler was one of many fifth graders who enjoyed kayaking as part of School of the Wild. For some, it was their first time on the water.

Mason Hollar and Ayla Ruff, with help from Wetlands Centre staff member Jan Stavroplus, search for creatures in the wetlands.

Abbey Harkrader, a naturalist with Clayton County Conservation, helped students complete a population count—but using caramels instead of an actual animal.

When Harkrader tasked the students with finding the caramels, she simply stated they were looking for something brown that was around an inch long. "When you find them, I'll show you how to peel them," she joked. The students were relieved to discover they weren't searching the woods edge for insects.

Chesney Vorwald, Alydia Abel and their group had fun putting on a short play representing a food chain.

Wearing boots and waders, students ventured into Bloody Run Creek to conduct a stream study. Naturalist Brian Gibbs had the kids looking under rocks and sifting through plants to see what they could discover.

Self guided walk will unearth history buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery

World renowned sleigh maker Charles Fessman is one of over 4,000 burials at Pleasant Grove.

Each notable person’s grave is marked with a sign that includes information about the individual. Most also feature a photo. Pictured here is the grave of businessman Venerable R. Miller.
