Fire at McGregor apartment building

McGregor Fire Chief Tom Sauer said the fire appears to have started because a resident had too many cords plugged in to an electrical outlet. Here, firefighter Joe Muehlbauer sprays down a couch that was removed from the building.

No one was injured, but all the residents are currently displaced, following a July 2 fire at a McGregor apartment building.

McGregor Masonic Block nets $100K Community Catalyst Grant


The city of McGregor was last week awarded a $100,000 grant through the Iowa Economic Development Authority’s Community Catalyst Building Remediation program. Funds will support rehabilitating the historic Masonic Block, located at 134-138 Main St. Black Swan Developers has proposed a nearly $2.6 million renovation project for the 15,000-square-foot building, which was constructed in 1866. The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) last week announced $2.6 million in grant funding to help 26 communities across the state revitalize their downtown districts. The grants were awarded through the Community Catalyst Building Remediation program.

Linda K. Caspersen

Linda K. Dohse Caspersen, 68, of Garnavillo, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 25, 2021. Linda was born on Feb. 19, 1953, to Robert and Iris (Frye) Dohse, joining brothers Kevin and Mark. She grew up in McGregor and graduated from MarMac High School in 1971. She received her associate’s degree in accounting in 1973 at WWTC in LaCrosse, Wis. In September of 1973, she was blessed with a son, Jeremy Carl. She was united in marriage to the love of her life, Ron Caspersen, in October of 1979. In August of 1981, she was blessed with a daughter, Shelly Ann.
