New art studio, The Collective, looks to enhance Elkader community

'Help Desk' features relatable customer service experiences

The MFL MarMac Middle School play, “Help Desk,” will be presented in the high school auditorium in Monona at 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday, March 26 and 27. It will also be livestreamed Friday night. Hailey Bouzek (left) is one of around 20 students involved in the production. One of her roles is Dani, a customer service manager who has to fire an employee played by Emma Koether (right). “You have the crazy customers in a few of the scenes, or you have the crazy help desk person who’s not useful at all. Each one has their own personality and way of responding to the phone calls,” said director Michelle Hontz.

Kiarra Young will play the character Marcus, who calls into the help desk about holey socks. It’s one of 12 different customer service scenarios portrayed in “Help Desk.”

Scott Campbell plays Vinny, who works for a package delivery company. He described the play as "funny and weird at the same time, which is what I enjoy. I’ve definitely grown more confident because I usually don’t do goofy stuff like this.”

Central offers morning pick-me-up with Central Perk coffee shop

Junior Brayden Finley mans the counter of Central Perk, the school’s very own student-run coffee shop which opened on Feb. 26 as a result of a project that started in the Clayton County BEST class. The shop offers a variety of products ranging from hot coffee, hot tea and hot chocolate to iced lattes and smoothies.

David P. Edwards

David Paul Edwards, 79, of Midlothian, Va., died Monday, March 15, 2021, at his home, surrounded by his family. David was born in Mason City on June 13, 1941 and grew up in Elkader. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the USAF, earning the rank of chief master sergeant. He proudly served his country for 27 years. After retiring from the Air Force, he earned a degree in criminal justice from Indiana University. He enjoyed the next 14 years as a background investigator for Defense Investigative Services. David was a true patriot and was dedicated to God, his country and his family.

McGregor’s brick streets listed on National Register of Historic Places

The brick portions of McGregor’s A and First streets, adjacent to Triangle Park, have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the McGregor Commercial Historic District. (Photos by Audrey Posten)

The distinguishable bricked sections date back to 1916, and are the last exposed brick pavers of a large-scale commercial paving project that spanned the entire length of Main Street.

Historian Jan Full, who wrote a nomination amendment to expand the bricks into the commercial historic district boundaries, said brick paver streets have not been much appreciated since modern paving and automobiles came to dominate transportation. “That made it very easy to lay asphalt over brick pavers as a part of street improvement projects. As such, good intact brick streets are becoming more rare nationwide every year,” she shared. “Communities like McGregor are fortunate to have recognized their brick streets for their beauty and historic character while they still had a few.”
