Central celebrates Christmas, bringing joy during a difficult year

“The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear,” so says Buddy from the movie Elf. Nowhere was this embodied quite like at Central, where the teachers literally, and figuratively, sung for all to hear through decking the halls, decorating the doors and delighting the students with carols. 

According to student council advisor Christie Burlingame, it was all done with an emphasis on trying to get everyone in the spirit in a different and very difficult school year. 

“We wanted some cheer where some kids have none,” she said.

McGregor Library plans activities centered around The Polar Express

Kids can participate in a Polar Express book walk and check out the books at the library. They can also take home an activity to make their own train treat.

Hop aboard the Polar Express! From now until Jan. 15, the McGregor Public Library is offering a series of activities centered around the classic children’s book that, in 2004, was also made into an animated film.

Children’s librarian Luana Stiemke said the idea started when staff decorated the library’s tree for McGregor’s annual Festival of Trees in a Polar Express theme. She was also encouraged by the success of Halloween week activities, where, instead of a large group event, kids could visit the library on their own time to play games and win treats.

“So I wanted to do something similar over the holiday break,” she said.

A fourth quarter rally propelled the MFL MarMac girls basketball team to a 35-32 win over visiting Central on Dec. 22. 

The Warriors had control of the game early, allowing just two Bulldog points in the first quarter and taking an 18-15 lead into halftime. By the end of the third quarter, they were up 25-21. MFL MarMac stormed back in the final period, though, going on a 12-0 run to start the frame. Junior Miranda Lang scored 10 of those points, including two key shots from behind the arc, as the Bulldogs eked out a three-point victory.

Central girls lose defensive battle at MFL MarMac

It was another close loss for the Central girls basketball team on Dec. 22, as the MFL MarMac Bulldogs held on to win 35-32. Central was not without its chances to win the game, however. 

In fact, the Warriors led 25-21 heading into the fourth quarter, but were out-scored by the Bulldogs 14-7 in the final period, leading to the defeat. 

The defensive battle had the Warriors shooting just 24.3 percent from the field and a season-low 13.3 percent from the three-point line. They also shot 54.5 percent from the free throw line, making just 12 of 22 shots.

MFL MarMac boys win big over Warriors

The MFL MarMac boys basketball team cruised past Central 64-41 in a Dec. 22 Upper Iowa Conference match-up. It gave the Bulldogs their third straight win.

The game was lop-sided from the start, as MFL MarMac jumped ahead 13-5 in the first quarter, then pushed the margin to 37-21 in the second. Central failed to mount a comeback in the final periods, losing by 23 points.

The Bulldogs took 16 fewer shots than the Warriors, but were more productive in their attempts, with a 41.7 completion percentage.

Central boys endure loss, but learn in the process

CJ Polkinghorn edges past MFL MarMac’s Carver Blietz-Bentien in the Warriors’ 64-41 loss to the Bulldogs. Polkinghorn had seven points, seven rebounds and one steal in the game.

The Central boys basketball team suffered another defeat last week, losing 64-41 to MFL MarMac on Dec. 22. The game came down to the Bulldog defense and missed opportunities for the Warriors. 

“MFL played solid man defense throughout the game. While they made our job difficult by taking away easy shots, there were also shots that we missed that frankly were quality looks,” coach Brady Stramer said. 

Central’s offense was stifled, shooting only 23.4 percent from the field and 17.2 percent on three pointers, which comes out to making only five of 29 attempts. Conversely, MFL MarMac shot over 40 percent in both categories.

Richard M. Russell

Richard Milton Russell, 67, of Marquette, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 2020, at Gundersen Health in La Crosse, Wis. He was born Aug. 13, 1953, to Milton and Ethel (Haerer) Russell in Waukon. Richard graduated from Waukon High School in 1971.

Richard was united in marriage with Renee Cummings on Feb. 19, 1972, at East Paint Creek Synod Church, Waterville. Three children were born to this union. Richard was employed at 3M in Prairie du Chien, Wis., for over 30 years. In his spare time, Richard enjoyed league softball, golfing, watching the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes, playing cards, browsing flea markets and reading newspapers and magazines.  His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren.

Trees just make me happy: Holst finds a meaningful way to decorate for Christmas

The ornaments aren’t the only meaningful aspects behind the Holsts’ trees. Most sit in older containers, such as a wooden crate, crock or galvanized pail. Old quilts are often tucked around the tree bases. “I love mixing the old with the new,” Amy said, “so when I get a new tree, I try to find a way to incorporate something old on the bottom.” See more on her Fawn Hollow Farmhouse Facebook and Instagram pages.

The home’s second living room contains a flocked balsam fir. “It was so breathtaking,” noted Amy, “that I didn’t even put any ornaments on it.”

“I decorated like Nov. 14 and 15,” Amy said. “I would’ve done it in October if I could have, but I don’t know if my family would allow that.” “I just want to enjoy the trees as long as I can,” she added.

Central State Bank closes McGregor branch

Central State Bank recently announced that it is permanently closing its McGregor branch, located at 214 Main St., and merging it with the nearby Marquette branch.

City officials courting other banks to fill the void

Health, safety and security concerns associated with the COVID-19 pandemic have forced the temporary closure of Central State Bank’s (CSB) location in downtown McGregor since this spring, but now the closure has been made permanent. In a letter to the McGregor community and CSB customers, bank president and CEO Greg Johnson said the McGregor and Marquette branches are merging—a move CSB believes is in the best interest of customers.

County health care workers will start receiving COVID-19 vaccine this week

News comes as 11 more COVID-19 deaths reported in Clayton County in the past week

Clayton County health care workers were expected to start receiving COVID-19 vaccinations this week, according to a press release from the Clayton County Visiting Nurse Association (VNA). 

“The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) has made initial allocations of COVID-19 vaccine available to local public health agencies across the state. The Clayton County Visiting Nurse Association has placed the county’s initial order for 600 doses of COVID-19 vaccine for those in priority groups identified in phase 1-A,” the release stated.
