Central hosts Veterans Day ceremony

Central’s Veterans Day ceremony guest speaker, navy veteran Ed Blume, delivered a speech talking about the sacrifice, honor and post-war problems faced by all veterans.

The Quilts of Valor recipients (from left to right) included Tim R. Koehn, David A. Koehn, Jerry Weber, Charles Morine, Carl Moser, Becky Reynolds Kann and Gary Williams. Quilts of Valor was founded in 2003 as a way to say “thank you for your service, sacrifice and valor in serving our nation.” They are awarded to service members or veterans who have been touched by war and, to date, there are over 10,000 volunteer members across 600 groups in all 50 states who have awarded more than 260,000 quilts to veterans. These quilts were handmade by members of the local Veterans Stitchers Quilts of Valor group.

Central Community School hosted a Veterans Day ceremony this past week, in what Superintendent Nick Trenkamp described as a day to “honor and recognize those who served our country.” The event featured multiple performances by the Central High School concert band and choir and was planned, organized and led by the school’s National Honor Society students, all of whom took turns emceeing the occasion. 

It was an event marked by emotional performances, a moment of silence and acknowledgement of local veterans for their service and sacrifice. It was also memorable for the presentation of Quilts of Valor and the speech given by the guest speaker, Navy veteran Ed Blume.

Despite high COVID rates in county, no all-virtual learning plans for MFL MarMac

Despite high COVID-19 positivity rates in Clayton County, MFL MarMac currently has no plans to move to all-virtual learning.

“The county rates are a lot higher than our school rates. Our actual number of students who are sick is still very manageable. The quarantine kids don’t count—it’s just kids who are actually sick,” said superintendent Dale Crozier at the district’s Nov. 9 school board meeting. “If the county rate of people testing positive is above 15 percent, which it is, and then if the actual absence rate is above 10 percent of people who are actually sick, then we’d have to look at a temporary closure. We’re not there yet.”

Marquette projects over $110k revenue loss due to pandemic

The city of Marquette is looking at potential cost-saving measures in anticipation of a revenue loss of just over $110,000 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

City clerk Bonnie Basemann updated the city council at its Nov. 10 meeting, noting that hotel/motel tax projections are 50 percent of what was budgeted.

“Instead of $80,000 at the end of the fiscal year, we may have just over $40,000,” she said. “Gaming revenue [from Casino Queen Marquette] is not as bad as I thought it would be. It’s only been running about 20 percent. I think, at the end of the year, we’ll only be about $50,000 short of what we projected.”

Elkader Council talks campground fire wood, approves street closure request

The Elkader City Council discussed several items at its Nov. 9 meeting, including the issue of firewood at the campground and a street closure request by Moyna & Sons for next year’s Antique Caterpillar Machinery Owners Club (ACMOC) show. 

Beginning with the first item, it appears part of the issue has to do with billing, donations and how the fire wood at the campground is being paid for, which became more of a matter back in 2005/2006 during the spike in gas prices.

Elkader issues proclamation encouraging use of face coverings

Last week, the Elkader City Council discussed the possibility of issuing an ordinance to enforce a COVID-19 mask mandate or simply issuing another proclamation  encouraging residents to wear masks. 

The discussion was prompted by a letter from the Clayton County Health Board that encouraged masks to be worn to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Neighboring cities such as Decorah and Guttenberg have also passed resolutions for an ordinance, where failure to wear a mask would result in first a verbal warning, then a written warning, and finally a $10 fine.

Ten MFL MarMac football players, along with head coach Dan Anderson, have received all-district honors.

Anderson led the Bulldogs to a 9-2 record this season, and the team earned its second-straight district title after tying with Wapsie Valley and South Winneshiek atop the Class A, District 4 standings.

Gerald L. Perrinjaquet

Gerald Louis Perrinjaquet, 94, of Edgewood, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home. Known affectionately as “Perry,” Gerald was born on Aug. 12, 1926, in Edgewood, the only child of Louie and Glennie (Porter) Perrinjaquet. A life-long resident of Edgewood, Gerald graduated from Edgewood High School in 1943 and served his country honorably in WWII for the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Japan. From the time he was a small boy working with his father to owning the business until his retirement, he dedicated his working career to building and growing the, now fourth generation, Edgewood Feed Mill. Gerald was a committed businessman and community contributor.

Betty Carol Rentschler, 82, of St. Olaf, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2020.      

Survivors include her husband, Curtis; five children, Rick (Beth) Rentschler of St. Olaf, Cindie (Lonny) Kuehl of Garnavillo, Brenda (Troy) Haberichter of Bagley, Wis., Julie (Steven) Fette of Coggon and Roxanne (Terry) Puelz of Garnavillo; 13 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; one brother, Carl (Dottie) Syverson of El Monte, Calif.; and one sister, Connie (Ervin) Jones of Swisher. She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Randy Rentschler.    

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

As bugler, Mays honors veterans and their families at military funerals

“Taps is 21 notes. About 55 seconds if you time it out,” said Jerry Mays. “But it’s how you play it—reverently.”

Mays would know. The rural McGregor resident has played the country’s most revered call on a bugle or trumpet at well over 500 military funerals and memorial and veterans ceremonies in the tri-state area since 2007.

Veteran Joel Bankes reflects on service

“It’s a day to remember and thank a veteran for the freedoms we have,” Joel Bankes said about the Veteran’s Day holiday. The retired Air Force master sergeant reflected fondly on his time in the military, service to the country and of the places it took him. 

A Central graduate in 1967, Bankes joined the military at 17, turning 18 while attending basic training at Lackland Air Force base in Texas. Service and life kept him from northeast Iowa until 2011, when, at the urging of his third wife, Karen, they moved back to the area. It was an unexpected decision, but Bankes is glad they did it because it reminds Karen of home back in upstate New York and it’s a safe place to live.
