MFL MarMac volleyball team wraps regular season

The MFL MarMac volleyball team wrapped up the regular season last week, following up a five-set loss to Clayton Ridge by sweeping Kee.

The Bulldogs started the Oct. 13 game at Clayton Ridge on a high note, easily winning the first set 25-17. The Eagles stormed back with 25-20 and 25-15 victories in the second and third frames, though, taking a 2-1 lead. MFL MarMac then evened the score with a 25-22 win in the fourth set. In the deciding fifth set, the Eagles flew away with a 15-9 finish.

Geraldine A. French

Geraldine (Gerry) Adeline French left her earthly home to join the love of her life and her lord on Oct. 12, 2020. Gerry was born March 23, 1928, outside Geddes, S.D., to Andrew and Adela (Bartekoske) Shea, the oldest of 14 children.  

Gerry was united in marriage to Kenneth (Kenny) Gene French on March 17, 1955, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Together, they had seven children: Terry (Dan) Sullivan, Dodgeville, Wis.; Sharon Taylor, Arlington; Jeanne (Mark) Mellon, Guttenberg; Cindy (Steve) Wendl, Anamosa; Jayme French, Manchester; Gary (Jennifer) French, Sydney, Australia; and Merry French, Aurora.

Robert D. Buckner

Robert Dean Buckner, 94, of Elkader, died Monday, Oct. 12, 2020, at Elkader Care Center, Elkader. He was born in Marion on Jan. 19, 1926, to Mike “MJ” and Neola (Staman) Buckner. Robert (Bob) was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

Daniel A. Nugent

Daniel “Dan” Allen Nugent, age 78, of rural Madelia, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2020. Private services will be held. Lake Crystal Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements. 

Dan was born on Nov. 28, 1941, to Clarence and Laura (Drahn) Nugent in McGregor. 

Dan served individuals in the mental health field for many years. He was forever compassionate and a calming presence. Dan loved baseball—playing in his younger years and attending games and going on baseball tours in his later years. He enjoyed writing poetry and “words of wisdom.”

DNR approves Supreme Beef nutrient management plan

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has approved a revised nutrient management plan (NMP) for the Supreme Beef, LLC open feedlot operation near Monona, but with a reduction in the number of animals at the site and removal of multiple manure application fields.

The decision from the DNR’s Field Office 1 in Manchester came Oct. 5, more than a month after the DNR held a virtual public meeting to gather input on the plan.

Elkader Vet Clinic owners Michelle Christianson and Ryan Royer recently purchased the Valley Veterinary Clinic in Elgin, a decision Valley’s former owner, Steven Carlson, said was mutual and has been beneficial for all involved.

Elkader Vet Clinic owners Michelle Christianson and Ryan Royer recently purchased the Valley Veterinary Clinic in Elgin, a decision Valley’s former owner, Steven Carlson, said was mutual and has been beneficial for all involved. 

It all started when Valley, a two-doctor practice, saw one of its doctors retire, leaving Carlson pulling double duty. In May 2020, he approached Royer about the option to buy the clinic in Elgin and, by August, Royer and Christianson were the new owners.

For Clayton County Sheriff Mike Tschirgi, that’s why he entered the law enforcement profession 30 years ago, and why he’s seeking a fourth term as the county’s top cop.

This year’s consideration to run admittedly came with a new challenge.

“When I took out my papers, we had just heard about COVID-19, and I thought, ‘What am I getting into?’” noted Tschirgi, a Republican who’s running unopposed in the Nov. 3 general election.

There’s less than one week left to purchase “Save the Bank” raffle tickets in support of The Left Bank Shop and Gallery in McGregor. For a small fee, the raffle tickets give buyers an opportunity to win a one-of-a-kind piece of art created by one of The Left Bank’s regional artists.

In addition to a small business government loan and appeals to friends of the art center, the raffle is one way the McGregor-Marquette Center for the Arts (MMCA) Board of Directors is seeking financial help to insure the continued operation of The Left Bank through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Monona Airport Board gets more time to improve airport’s financial situation

The Monona Airport Board has been given more time to improve the airport’s financial situation. The city council had originally given the board until Oct. 1 to submit a funding proposal before determining if the property should be put up for sale.

A potential buyer approached the city about purchasing the airport property, which is located three miles southeast of Monona, earlier in the summer. Declining revenue and a drop in use forced the council to seriously consider the idea.

The child of civil service oriented parents, Volga Mayor Carrie Taylor said politics were always “ingrained” within her, as was the love of small town Americana. The Manchester native chose to stay, rather than leave, because she wanted to be close to family and loved the community. While she had the opportunity to travel, opening doors and broadening horizons, none of those places ever felt like home. 

“Home was in Iowa,” Taylor said. In her words, “you can always travel, but there’s no place like home,” so she chose “family over luxury,” and settled in Volga with husband Jay and their two boys.
