Clayton County has new social host ordinance

Clayton County has a new social host ordinance that proponents hope will further deter adults from allowing underage alcohol and drug use at social gatherings.

The measure, approved by the Clayton County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 6, builds on a state law that’s been enacted since 2014.

“The state law applies to youth under the age of 18 and is alcohol-specific,” explained Merry French, program director of Substance Abuse Services of Clayton County (SASCC). The county ordinance expanded that to include “anyone under the age of 21 and also includes controlled substances.”

Murphy Helwig Library hopes Teen Council will engage local youth

Murphy Helwig Library in Monona is forming a Teen Council to help local youth engage more with the library.

“We have a long-standing children’s craft and story hour, but we haven’t done a lot with young adults,” said library assistant Susan Trappe. “We want to bring more teens into the library.”

What better way to do that, she thought, than letting teens develop their own programming.

MFL MarMac wrestlers cap off successful individual seasons at state

MFL MarMac wrestlers Karter Decker (126 pounds), Gabe McGeough (145 pounds), Jacob Trudo (heavyweight) and Zach Howe (195 pounds) capped off successful seasons at the state tournament in Des Moines Feb. 20-22.

126-pound Karter Decker finished his freshman year with a stellar 44-3 record.

Bulldog heavyweight Jacob Trudo, a junior, flew under the radar for much of the season, but turned up the intensity in January and February.

The tournament got off to a good start for 195-pound senior Zach Howe, who had a first-round fall over Kale Pevestorf of Coon Rapids-Bayard.

Sophomore Gabe McGeough won the fifth-place medal at 145 pounds in Class 1A. It was the best finish for an MFL MarMac underclassman in over a decade and a half.

“One thing I think I do well is rise to the occasion,” said Gabe McGeough. “I didn’t probably wrestle the best I could my first match, but as the tournament went on, I kept wrestling better and better. By the end, I was wrestling the best I had all year.”

McGeough, a sophomore, won the fifth-place medal at 145 pounds in Class 1A—the best placement for a Bulldog underclassman since Kyle Pedretti a decade and a half ago.

“They’ve put in a lot of work, a lot of weekends, getting ready,” said head coach Chet Bachman. “I’m proud of these guys for making it to the state tournament. They represented us very well.”

Chemistry propels friends to all-state speech nomination

A rare nomination in the group improvisation category has the MFL MarMac trio of Max Koeller, Nick Stavroplus and Jaxton Schroeder headed to the Iowa High School Speech Association Large Group All-State Festival this Saturday at Iowa State University. The group is just one of five in the northeast district that received straight ones at state and was chosen by judges to perform.

One of the most popular group speech categories, improv differs from others in that the skit is not pre-recorded or repeatedly practiced and performed at each level of competition. Rather, the story line differs each time—forcing participants to spontaneously craft a unique tale for the judges and audience.

Four MFL MarMac wrestlers have punched tickets to the Iowa High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines this week. Zach Howe was the 195-pound champion at Saturday’s Class 1A District 6 Tournament at Starmont, while Jacob Trudo, Gabe McGeough and Karter Decker qualified after placing second in their respective weight classes.

Sophomore Kashton Mathis placed fourth at 120 pounds, and fell short of advancing.

Driver injured when snow plow was struck by train

A city of Monona employee was seriously injured Feb. 13, when the snow plow he was operating was struck by a train. 

The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a dump truck versus train accident on West North Street, in Monona, at 11:54 a.m. According to a press release, deputies determined the driver was conducting snow removal operations when the vehicle was struck by an eastbound train containing five railcars. The city of Monona said the rail crossing was unmarked.

The driver of the dump truck was transported to Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien, Wis., and later transferred to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, Wis., for treatment of serious injuries.

Harold Junior Krambeer

Harold Junior Krambeer, 77, of Farmersburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020, at his home in Farmersburg. Harold was born Nov. 15, 1942, in Farmersburg, the fourth child of Harold John Krambeer and Leona Fascher Krambeer. He was baptized Dec. 13, 1942, at St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg and confirmed there on March 25, 1956. He graduated from Monona Farmersburg Community High School in 1960 and served his country in the United States Air Force as a photo interpretation specialist during the Vietnam War. 

On Dec. 4, 1965, Harold married Deanna Schlitter. One child, Ross, was born to this union. He worked for a number of years installing and repairing rural and domestic water systems for Duane Lubbers. He found this work his most rewarding. He finished his working career as manager of the Swiss Valley Farms Packaging Plant at St. Olaf.

Jennifer Yager—great granddaughter of White Springs’ long-time owner, Ethel Mann—and her husband Robert are working to rehab the site on Klein Brewery Road and reopen the restaurant in its former glory.

Robert, who has 20 years of experience in the restaurant business, said he’s contemplated the idea for awhile.

Bond vote for facilities improvement project is less than a month away

Voters in the MFL MarMac Community School District will head to the polls on Tuesday, March 3, to decide if $7.8 million in general obligation bonds should be issued to fund an extensive facilities improvement project.

The largest addition will be a fieldhouse to the west side of the high school building in Monona, which will encase two full-sized courts with a walking track.

“The two-court complex will convert into one full-sized competition court with bleachers that will extend from both sides,” said MFL MarMac Superintendent Dale Crozier in his latest “Crozier’s Comments” column. “The complex will include an entrance with a commons, locker rooms, a training room and a hallway to the main schoolhouse.”
