Legacy Show Choir returns with another entertaining show

MFL MarMac’s Legacy Show Choir kicked off its competition season in late January, with a division one rating at state. The group will perform multiple times in February and March, including the MFL MarMac Pops Concert on Thursday, Feb. 23, and the Legacy Home Show on Sunday, March 26. (Submitted photo)

A year removed from its most successful season yet, MFL MarMac’s Legacy Show Choir feels a bit of pressure to live up to the bar set by previous classes.

“Us seniors, especially, feel a lot of pressure,” said Hailee Corlett. “We all want to make those past seniors proud.”

“Last year, we had a lot of really talented individuals in the group,” added Micheal Balster. “Not that we don’t this year. But we have to live up to that standard.”

The 25-member group hopes its show, which chronicles moving from darkness into light, will wow audiences.

MFL MarMac adding soccer

By Audrey Posten, Times-Register

MFL MarMac high school students will have the opportunity to compete in soccer starting next spring. The school board, at its Feb. 13 meeting, unanimously approved sanctioning the sport.

Athletic director Erik Peterson said MFL MarMac would likely field both boys and girls programs. Eleven players are needed to compete on the field, but he believes 16 would be an attainable number given feedback from current and incoming high school students. Several staff members are already interested in coaching.

Peterson estimated the program start-up cost would be around $20,000.

The Marquette Council, at its Feb. 14 meeting, learned more details about Casino Queen Marquette’s plans to become completely land-based.

General Manager Sean Bateman said the project, which will include a 12,000-square-foot addition to Casino Queen Marquette’s current building along Anti Monopoly Street, will start in July, at the earliest.

“The goal is to get it done in 12 to 15 months and be open by late summer or early fall 2024,” he stated. “But nothing has been put in stone yet on the timeline.”

Through this project, the casino “will come out of the water and be completely land based,” according to Bateman. “The goal is to eliminate the sky walk as well.”

Bulldogs bring home confidence—and two medals—from state tournament

Pictured (left to right) are MFL MarMac state qualifiers Keith Anderson, Holden Mathis, Karter Decker, Quinn McGeough and Taylor Herzmann. (Photos by Audrey Posten)

Junior Holden Mathis placed fifth at 132 pounds in Class 1A.

Mathis' seven matches were the most wrestled by a Bulldog at the tournament. He credited his mindset for the success. “Thinking to myself I’m going to go out there and wrestle my match as hard as I can and never give up. I knew their seeds,” he said of his higher seeded competition. “It motivated me.”

For Karter Decker, the fourth time was the charm at this year’s state tournament. The senior accomplished the rare feat of qualifying four times, but had yet to reach the podium.

Decker earned some hardware this year, placing sixth at 145 pounds.

Sophomore Quinn McGeough, wrestling at 160 pounds, went 2-2 at the state tournament.

With two years of high school remaining, McGeough is motivated to return to Des Moines. “I had a lot of fun down there. And now that I know what it’s like, it definitely prepares me for future years. I’m excited to get back down there and hopefully be on the podium,” he said.

Keith Anderson was a surprise entrant into the state tournament, after the top district qualifier from Starmont was unable to compete.

Anderson lost both his 113-pound matches by fall, but was proud of his effort, especially to cut roughly eight pounds in one day.

For Taylor Herzmann, a senior wrestling at 220 pounds, qualifying for state was the highlight of his wrestling career.

Herzmann lost both his matches despite a strong effort. “I was ready to wrestle,” Herzmann added. “I thought to myself, ‘It’s now or never. Go get it.’ I wrestled the best I could, stayed in good position the whole match and only lost by a couple points.”

Central wrestling season sets the stage for future program success

Freshman Braxton Bormann lost both his 120-pound matches at last week's state tournament, but his success this season bodes well individually and for the Central program. (Photos by Audrey Posten)

"He battled in each match. He’s a tough kid and this will sting, but it will push him to bounce back even tougher next year,” said coach Joe Koehn of Bormann's experience.

MFL MarMac advances with win over New Hampton

Defense continues to play a large role in the Bulldogs’ success. Here, sophomore Parker Kuehl contests a Chickasaw shot in the Feb. 16 game.

Wyatt Powell flies past the Chickasaw defense in last week's MFL MarMac victory.

Sophomore Zach Driscoll led the Bulldogs with 28 points and eight assists.

Brock Hackett's smothering defense helped limit New Hampton's scoring in the second half.
