Highlighting Inspiring Women: She has done it all

Joanne Strutt

Jo Strutt was a church choir director for 60 years. She still sings every day.

In a lifetime of learning and experiences, Jo said the family she and Don raised is what she’s most proud of. The couple is pictured with children Charles, David, Dawson, Craig and Darci.

Throughout March, which is Women’s History Month, the North Iowa Times is again publishing a series of articles highlighting local women. Whether it’s through their careers, hobbies, volunteer efforts or unique personalities, these women have become an inspiration to others.

Many women strive to “do it all,” balancing raising kids with working, volunteering and enjoying hobbies. For one of McGregor’s beloved icons, Joanne Strutt, she’s actually done it.

MFL MarMac will roll out ‘educational opportunities’ for students this week

Last week, MFL MarMac began offering free grab and go breakfast and lunch for children 18 and younger at all communities in the district, assuring students remain fed while school is closed. MFL MarMac and other school districts across Iowa will not have to make up the instructional hours they have—and will—miss while closed until April 13 due to COVID-19.

Whether that closure is extended is yet to be known, said superintendent Dale Crozier, “but that’s the time frame we’re looking at now.”

Over the past week, Crozier said he’s met regularly with the state’s department of education, Keystone Area Education Agency and other local superintendents to navigate the district through these uncharted waters.

“We have to be able to move right and left and adapt constantly,” he noted. “I haven’t had a chance to stop, or to think about stopping.”

Food Shelf remains open, with precautions in place

By Audrey Posten, North Iowa Times

Many local entities have closed or limited their hours over the past week due to the spread of COVID-19, but the Clayton County Food Shelf isn’t one of them. The social service remains open its regular hours, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.

But director Utoni Ruff is taking social distancing precautions to protect both herself and the food shelf’s patrons.

In the matter of just a week, daily life for Clayton County residents has changed drastically due to the threat of the novel coronavirus. Schools and public offices have shuttered, health care facilities have restricted visitors, and many events and social gatherings have been canceled or postponed in an effort to curb potential transmission.

As of Monday night, March 16, Iowa had 23 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including two reported Sunday from Allamakee County. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), one individual is a middle-age adult between 41 and 60 years old, while the second is a child under 18. Both cases are related to international travel.
