Effigy Mounds art exhibit re-imagines Iowa

“This is a little bit of the past connecting with the present, because we’re all here today looking at the wonderful work, but it’s kind of forward-looking work as well,” said Effigy Mounds Superintendent Jim Nepstad at the exhibit’s Aug. 30 opening reception.

Jessica Pope said the plan is for the Effigy Mounds Visitor Center to become more of a cultural center—"a living, breathing site where all Americans can come together and get to know one another.” The exhibit plays well into this vision.

Reuben IronHorse-Kent is one of five Ioway artists whose work is featured in “ReImagining Iowa.” He spoke about his piece at the opening reception.

Phillip Pursel’s painting features an Iowa corn maiden.

Sydney Pursel took a more interactive approach. “I wanted to make something that was touchable,” she explained. “I wanted to do something that had an impact and would actually contribute to the re-wilding of Iowa.” The result was two gum ball machines filled with seed balls. The balls are made of clay and compost with seeds rolled up in them. Thanks to input from Effigy Mounds staff, Pursel purchased seeds that are specific to the area.

“Many of us who’ve established roots in areas for a generation or two become very attached to those places. Some might have roots in Iowa that are six, seven generations deep. But imagine having ancestors that have been attached to the land for hundreds of generations? They remember a place very different than it looks today,” shared Effigy Mounds Superintendent Jim Nepstad at an opening reception for the exhibit on Aug. 30.

Two occupants unhurt in McGregor house fire

No injuries were reported, but a home has been deemed “unlivable,” following a fire near McGregor on Sept. 5.

McGregor Hook and Ladder Co. No. 1 responded to a structure fire at 30279 Klein Brewery Road, just outside McGregor, around 8 a.m. Firefighters remained on scene until 10:30 a.m., to contain the blaze.

“It started in the garage area,” near the rear of the home, said Trampus Thornton, with McGregor Hook and Ladder. “Then it went into the house.”

According to Thornton, two people were in the home at the time the fire started, but were able to escape. The home was not so lucky.

Jaxson James Jones

Jaxson James Jones, five days old, of Harpers Ferry, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019, at Gundersen Health System, La Crosse, Wis.

Jaxson is survived by his parents, Chelsey Young and Peter Jones of Harpers Ferry; one sister, Carlie Jones; maternal grandparents, Brian and Lisa Young; paternal grandparents, Darci Jones and Thomas Burke and Henry Jones and Elfriede Marcussen; great-grandparents, Darwin Hallberg and Darlene Adrian; uncles and aunts, Joseph Lenz Jr., Jeremy (Alicia) Lenz, Kyle Young (Briana Berger), Anna Jones (Don Moose), Sara Jones and Adam (Cydney) Jones; and seven cousins, McKenna, McKlain, Avery, McKoeta, Lainey, Riley and Beckett. He was preceded in death by several great-grandparents.

Bringing back GRRRR: Iconic event returns Oct. 5

Over the next few weeks, the North Iowa Times will spotlight the history of the Great River Road - Road Race, as well as the activities that will be offered this year as part of the reincarnation of the iconic fall event.

After a 17-year hiatus, the Great River Road - Road Race  (GRRRR) will be back on Saturday, Oct. 5. 

“It’s been talked about for years, and this year, it finally got off the ground,” said Duane Boelman, one of the event organizers. “There was an amazing amount of interest right away. So many people remember it well.”

A Labor Day weekend ride-along with the Mar-Mac PD

Labor Day weekend was part of a special Traffic Enforcement Program (sTEP) period for the Mar-Mac Unified Law Enforcement District, meaning officers joined other local and state agencies in a higher-visibility traffic enforcement effort in support of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.

Based around holidays like Labor Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July and St. Patrick’s Day, these sTEP “waves” don’t really change a whole lot about how officers normally patrol, said Mar-Mac Police Chief Robert Millin.

Fundraiser will aid those going through cancer treatment

MFL MarMac Friends Helping Friends will hold its annual cancer fundraiser on Friday, Sept. 6, and Saturday, Sept. 7.

The event began seven years ago, separate from the group’s Winter Triathlon and Benefit, recalled organizer Gay Hallberg. 

“We wanted to do another fundraiser because all these people were getting cancer,” she said, “but we didn’t want to take from the Winter Triathlon fund.”

The weekend’s first event, Bart Bingo, will be held this year at Backwoods Bar and Grill, in McGregor, on Friday night. Pre-sign up begins at 6 and 8 p.m.

Monona Pharmacy adjusting to change as NuCara telepharmacy

On June 3, customers of the Monona Pharmacy noticed a change to the business. The pharmacy changed ownership and transformed into a telepharmacy.

Now owned by NuCara, the change is designed to make life easier for customers. “It is much more convenient for the customers because now they can come in anytime during our hours to pick up prescriptions, whereas, before, they could only come in the afternoon to do so,” said pharmacy technician Deb Evanson.

The MFL MarMac volleyball team will rely on four returning seniors to propel its success this season.

“They have seen three years of varsity and are used to playing with each other,” said head coach Kelly Winter of the core group, which includes Bailey Winter, Brinan Berger, RoseMary McGeough and Rachel Davis. “These seniors have played enough volleyball together to know each other’s tendencies, and that is going to help us in close games. They just all mesh together and are not selfish about how we get the win, as long as we get it.”

This season, for the first time in recent years, MFL MarMac will field full boys and girls cross country teams.

“And what’s better,” said head coach Eric Koenig, “we’ve got a solid five boys and five girls who have the potential to score well as a team at every meet.”

Koenig said the team is full of kids who enjoy running and pushing themselves to get better. A great group of seniors has emerged as real leaders, and they’re setting good examples for the younger athletes, he added. The underclassmen also have a lot of talent, and they aren’t afraid to work.

Aug. 23 didn’t just mark the first day of school at MFL MarMac for some students. For several staff members, it was also their first official day of classes with the district. Joining MFL MarMac this year are teachers Jillian Burke, Amber Hendricks and Monica Schwartzhoff; nurse Sara Kelly; guidance support staff member Stacie Cooper; paraprofessionals Casey Evanson and Tiffany Torkelson; and student teacher Brock Sorensen, who will work with high school industrial technology teacher Joe Milewsky. Information on some of the new staff members is included below.
