MFL MarMac Elementary to celebrate Kindness Week Feb. 9-13

Local organizations seek votes in Community Aces Challenge

Several local organizations need your vote as they compete to win a share of $50,000 in the Community Aces Challenge, sponsored by Isle of Capri Casinos, Inc.

The McGregor Park Board, Smith and Bulldog Childcare and Learning Centers and Luana Community and Recreation Center are three of the 150 groups from around the country competing for funds. Each group was accepted into the challenge after submitting an application toward the end of 2014. 

The competition is split into two categories—one for larger communities where Isle of Capri properties are located, and another for smaller communities, like Marquette. Within each category, one $15,000 grant and one $10,000 grant will go to the top vote-getters.

Martha Lynn “Princess” Sauer

Martha Lynn “Princess” Sauer, 53, died on Monday, Jan. 26, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse. 

Martha was born Oct. 31, 1961 to Charles and Ivanelle (Corlett) Sauer in McGregor, Iowa. Martha graduated from Mar-Mac High School, McGregor, Iowa in 1980. After graduation she traveled all over the United States and Germany, making friends far and wide. Martha worked at The Isle of Capri in Marquette, Iowa for many years and most recently was employed at Greene in Monona, Iowa.

Have a Heart Day offers free dental care

On Saturday, Feb. 14, Family Dentistry Associates of Monona, Waukon Dental and Dental Associates of Prairie du Chien will again hold Have a Heart Day, an annual event that provides free dental care for area kids. On Saturday, Feb. 14, Family Dentistry Associates of Monona, Waukon Dental and Dental Associates of Prairie du Chien will again hold Have a Heart Day, an annual event that provides free dental care for area kids.

The service began 25 years ago in Monona and Waukon, in relation to a Dentists with a Heart program already in practice across the country, said Dr. Mark Fohey. When the Prairie du Chien office opened 21 years ago, Have a Heart Day also took root there.

Have a Heart Day typically takes place the Saturday closest to Valentine’s Day, which, this year, happens to actually be Valentine’s Day. Children ages 4 to 18 can take advantage of several procedures at no charge, including exams, consultations, x-rays, fillings, extractions and sealants.

McGregor groups give updates, plans for 2015

Several groups gave their yearly updates to the McGregor City Council Jan. 21, highlighting some of their accomplishments of 2014, as well as plans for 2015. Those providing reports included the McGregor Public Library, McGregor Park Board, McGregor-Marquette Center for the Arts and McGregor-Marquette Chamber of Commerce.

Library Director Michelle Pettit said 12,305 visits were made to the library last year.   They held 82 children’s programs, with 781 in attendance. For the adults, 101 programs were held, with 626 people in attendance. 

A total of 16,167 items were borrowed in 2014. The top circulating books were:

Arlene Myrtle Erb

Arlene Myrtle Erb, 97, McGregor, died Sunday, Jan. 18, in McGregor. 

She was born Nov. 17, 1917 to Joseph and Borghild (Olson) Larson in Clermont, Iowa. She was baptized on Jan. 13, 1918 and confirmed at East Clermont Lutheran Church, Clermont, Iowa. Arlene graduated from Postville High School in 1936.

‘Team up against cancer:’ MFL MarMac holds awareness event

MFL MarMac High School students and staff wore “team up against cancer” shirts Friday as part of a two-day cancer awareness event Jan. 15-16. Each person selected a cancer awareness color that meant something to them personally.

MFL MarMac High School social studies teacher and Hodgkins Lymphoma survivor Adam Simon was the featured speaker at the cancer awareness assembly.

MFL MarMac held another successful cancer awareness event last week, as students, staff and community members came together to “team up against cancer.”

The event kicked off Jan. 15 with the home wrestling meet versus Turkey Valley and Clayton Ridge. It continued Friday morning with an assembly organized by the high school student council, featuring high school social studies teacher and Hodgkins Lymphoma survivor Adam Simon as the key speaker.

Marquette discusses business and tourism issues

Councilwoman Cindy Halvorson broached the subject of the city of Marquette restoring funding to the McGregor-Marquette Chamber of Commerce at the city’s Jan. 14 meeting, citing dissatisfaction with Marquette’s business and tourism efforts.

“I feel the Chamber is the best choice for Marquette,” Halvorson said. “We need to listen to what the taxpaying businesses want. We’re not voted in for what we want, but what they want.”

Morgan Alonzo Loper

Morgan Alonzo Loper, 86, of McGregor, died Saturday, Jan. 10, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien. 

He was born on May 8, 1928 to William and Ethel (Cooper) Loper in Dubuque, Iowa. He attended country school in Dubuque. Morgan was united in marriage with Marilyn Adney on Aug. 19, 1949. They enjoyed 65 happy years together. He worked construction in his younger years and was the head mechanic specializing in alignments at Huinker Chevrolet in Monona for 25 years. At one time he was the state inspector for car alignments. Morgan enjoyed tinkering with broken things, camping, fishing, hunting, Saturday evening dinners with friends and family and taking rides to Dairy Queen and having a milk shake.

R Place Sports Bar and Grill slated to open in Monona soon

Monona will soon have another dining option, with the opening of R Place Sports Bar and Grill planned before the end of January. Located at 107 E. Center St., the former home of Jodi’s Americana Grill, R Place will be owned and operated by Lary Walter, who also owns One R’s St. Olaf Tap.

Located at 107 E. Center St., the former home of Jodi’s Americana Grill, R Place will be owned and operated by Lary Walter, who also owns One R’s St. Olaf Tap. The name R Place is a play on Walter’s first name, which is spelled with just one “R.”

“I thought people needed a place to come and eat, sit and relax and have drinks and a meal in a family atmosphere,” said Walter, a 1990 MFL graduate. “I’d really like to see Monona thrive.”
