New full-time officer and reserve officer join Mar-Mac PD

One full-time officer and one reserve officer have joined the Mar-Mac Unified Law Enforcement District.

Joining the department full-time is Brad McNett. He replaces Dylan Rumph, who departed over the summer for a position at the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office. With McNett’s addition, Mar-Mac will have three full-time officers, including police chief Jason Bogdonovich and officer Rodger Sear.

McGregor FEMA project underway after 5.5-year wait

After 5.5 years of dealing with easements, studies, mitigation and other permitting issues, the city of McGregor is finally ready to go to bid on its FEMA stormwater protection project.

“It’s been a long time coming,” noted Tim Cutsforth, of engineering firm HR Green, who spoke about the project at a special council meeting Nov. 4.

Items on MFL MarMac’s five-year strategic plan already being checked off

MFL MarMac’s School Improvement Advisory Committee (SIAC) met Monday night, before the school board meeting, to evaluate the district’s five-year strategic plan, which was created earlier this year.

Some items on the list, including an updated website and playgrounds, are already being addressed, noted Superintendent Dale Crozier, speaking to the board.

The list has come a long way since 15 years ago, he said, when items to address included fixing boilers and roofs as well as purchasing buses.

Later this month, Dr. Jim Arvidson will retire from a career that, over 36.5 years, brought him laughter, learning experiences and a resounding connection with the community he served.

“Dentistry has given me what I wanted and needed it to,” he said.

Spurred on by a good relationship with his dentist as well as an interest in science sparked by his scientist father, Arvidson, who grew up in Des Moines, became attracted to the profession in junior high.

K9 Raven highlights Red Ribbon Week

Students at MFL MarMac’s McGregor Center recognized Red Ribbon Week last week, learning about the importance of living drug-free. A highlight of the week included a visit from Clayton County K9 Raven, who was part of a presentation by her partner, Clayton County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Moser.

Raven, 2, is an all-black German Shepherd who was born in Poland and trained in Michigan.

“She is a dual-purpose indicator,” Moser told students, meaning Raven can locate both drugs and people. She can also apprehend criminals, biting and holding the individual down until an officer can handcuff him/her.

Schutte competes at state cross country meet

MFL MarMac freshman Hannah Schutte (530) capped off a stellar cross country season with a 47th-place finish in Class 1A at the state meet in Fort Dodge on Oct. 31.

MFL MarMac freshman Hannah Schutte capped off a stellar cross country season with a 47th-place finish in Class 1A at the state meet in Fort Dodge on Oct. 31.

With a time of 21:26.7, Schutte placed in the middle of the pack. Alyssa Williams, a senior from Durant, placed first with a time of 19:12.9.

Head coach Eliza Philpott said she feels this is just the start for Schutte.

“I think that every person, at some point in their athletic career, wants to make it to state,” Philpott said. “For Hannah, this came true in her very first year ever in cross country.”

Severna A. DaVelaar

Severna A. DaVelaar, 98, formerly of Waterloo and Evansdale, died Saturday, Oct. 24, at Sunrise Hill Care & Rehab Center, Traer.

She was born May 20, 1917, in Ridgeway, daughter of Severn and Anna Langan Olson. She married Lester Pillard in 1936 and they later divorced. She married John W. DaVelaar on Aug. 11, 1945, in Galena, Ill.; he died March 27, 2003.

A 1934 graduate of McGregor High School, Severna and her husband owned and operated both Jax Tavern and Evansdale Furniture Store for 20 years, retiring in 1970.

The taste of wellness

Farm to School Month connects students with locally-grown foods

October is National Farm to School Month, a celebration of the growing connection between students and healthy, locally-grown food. MFL MarMac is one of over 40,000 schools across the country to participate in the program, with kids sampling and learning about several new foods throughout the month.

“The dietary department provided samples of recipes created with locally-grown produce through Taste Test Tuesdays, including cabbage, zucchini and sweet potatoes,” explained McGregor Center nurse Jennelle Schroeder, who also handles the middle school’s wellness activities.

Marquette Council candidates talk tourism, economic development and more

Marquette residents will take to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 3, to elect a new mayor and two new council members. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Marquette Community Center.

Current mayor Norma Mason chose not to run again, and no candidates filed for the position, leaving the election of the mayor up to write-in votes. To-date, the North Iowa Times is aware that Larry Breuer and David Schneider have declared themselves as write-in candidates. In order for the vote to count, their full names must be used.
