Ship shares piece of WWII history with area

The World War II ship the USS LST 325 passed by Marquette and McGregor on Aug. 28, headed north to La Crosse, Wis. La Crosse and Dubuque (Sept. 7-12) are two of the ship’s three scheduled stops on an annual cruise away from its home port in Evansville, Ind., where it’s docked as a floating history museum. (Photo by Audrey Posten)

Dan Keyes of McGregor piloted the LST 325 during seven cruises covering 9,000 miles from 2012 to 2018. (Submitted photo)

This photo shows Dan Keyes’ perspective as the LST 325 went through a lock in 2016. At 328 feet long and 50 feet wide, the LST 325 is a smaller ship for the ocean, but big for rivers like the Mississippi. Keyes said locks, for example, are 400 feet long and 75 feet across, making for a tighter fit when maneuvering through the lock and dam system. (Submitted photo)

The LST 325, pictured here in Vicksburg, Miss., during one of Dan Keyes’ tours in 2016, is the last fully operational WWII LST. LST stands for landing ship tank, and the vessels were used to get troops, tanks and supplies on and off enemy beaches. (Submitted photo)
