Holst and Ruegnitz medal at meets

Alexis Thiese finished 22nd at last week’s race in Guttenberg, also setting a season best time.

Gavin Holst medaled in both of Central's meets last week.

Hannah Friedlein traverses the course at the Guttenberg Golf and Country Club on Sept. 10.

Howard E. Mayer

Howard Edward Mayer, 87, died Sept. 11, 2024, from Alzheimer’s Dementia. Howard was born in Clinton on June 20, 1937, to Howard and Gertrude (Byam) Mayer. He was number six of nine children. Known as “Skip” by his family, he thanked his sister Betty and his love of peanut butter for the nickname. Turns out it was prophetic.

A look back: St. Joseph's Catholic Church celebrates 175 years

St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader will celebrate its 175th anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 15, with a special worship at 10 a.m. A lunch will follow in the parish hall with a history presentation by David Beck at 1 p.m. (Photos by Willis Patenaude)

The first stone church, or “Rock Church,” used by St. Joseph’s parishioners was built in 1856. It is now used as a gathering place for social events.

One historical artifact displayed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church is an old press used to make communion bread. It was salvaged from an old dumpsite by Werner Fassbinder, who came to Elkader in 1930 and was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s.

This statue of St. Francis was donated by a parishioner and is believed to have survived World War II in a cave.

Proposed condo project poses infrastructure and parking conundrum for McGregor

With the proposed construction of riverfront condos, the city of McGregor will likely have to raise Front Street, the area on the right side of the photo along the railroad tracks that is almost entirely parking lot. Upgrades make MFL MarMac gym more attractive, usable

Upgrades to the MFL MarMac high school gym over the summer have transformed it into a more attractive and usable space.
