Kid Captain giving back to children’s hospital

Max Schlee (front, right), a 7 year old from Farmersburg, was selected as a Kid Captain for the 2023 Iowa Hawkeyes season. He and his family attended Kid’s Day in August, and met head football coach Kirk Ferentz. Pictured with Max are twin brother Cooper, older siblings Austin and Kelsi and parents Steve and Jamie. (Submitted photos)

Max Schlee (left) and brother Cooper met favorite player Tory Taylor at Kid’s Day. Max will be Kid Captain at the Oct. 7 game. In mid-September he’ll deliver toys and other items collected for the Child Life team at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital—a group that’s done so much for him during medical visits. (Submitted photo)

Max Schlee was born with a cleft palate as well as a genetic disorder called medium-chain acyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase, or MCAD. In short, he’s missing an enzyme that prevents his body from converting fat into energy. He's been at the children's hospital often for surgeries and other appointments and is excited to give back and make stays better for other kids.

Max Schlee and siblings Kelsi, Cooper and Austin pose with his Kid Captain banner. Max is doing well now and enjoys playing sports and going to school.
