Dorothy A. Jennings

Dorothy Ann Jennings, 83, of Farmersburg, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 13, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, after a short illness. She was born Sept. 22, 1939, at home in rural Elkader, the oldest of two girls born to Ervin and Mildred (Meyer) Taake. Dorothy attended rural school in Clayton Center until it closed and then attended and graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1958. After graduation she attended Bayless Business College in Dubuque, and then worked for a law firm there and later at Interstate Power (now Alliant Energy) in Elkader.

Monona Family Aquatic Center will host pair of dog swim fundraisers this weekend


Dog owners will have two opportunities to splash in the water with their pets when the Monona Family Aquatic Center hosts a pair of dog swim fundraisers this weekend. The Humane Society of Northeast Iowa’s 13th annual Pooch Paddle will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26. Then, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 27, Rivers & Bluffs Animal Shelter will, for the first time, hold its popular Puppy Paddle in Monona. (Times-Register file photo)

Ghosts of McGregor's Past: Event will bring colorful characters to life


The Ghosts of McGregor’s Past Guided Historical Walking Tour will bring some of the town’s most colorful characters to life. Maureen and Mel Wild will portray Margaretha and Albert Clemens, mother and brother of sand artist Andrew Clemens. The event will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2. Carter St. Cottage is a cozy little place to stay while visiting Elkader
